Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">More than 100 American service members have traumatic brain injuries from Iranian airstrikes on Al Asad Air Base in Iraq in January, the Defense Department said, a number that was more than 50 percent higher than previously disclosed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Of the 109 troops who have been diagnosed with brain injuries, 76 had returned to duty, officials said Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cWe are grateful to the efforts of our medical professionals who have worked diligently to ensure the appropriate level of care for our service members, which has enabled nearly 70 percent of those diagnosed to return to duty,\u201d said Alyssa Farah, the Pentagon press secretary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The latest tally, which has steadily grown since the Jan. 8 strike, drew a sharp contrast with the assertion by the Trump administration in the hours after the attack that no Americans were hurt. The number also underscored the unseen effects of traumatic brain injuries, which sometimes do not manifest symptoms for days or weeks but can have long-term physical or mental effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">And as the injury toll has mounted, veterans groups and others have levied criticism at the White House, in part because, in January, President Trump <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/22\/world\/middleeast\/trump-iraq-brain-injuries.html\">dismissed<\/a><\/strong><\/span> the injuries as \u201cnot very serious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cI heard that they had headaches and a couple of other things,\u201d Mr. Trump said at a news conference Jan. 22 in Davos, Switzerland. \u201cI don\u2019t consider them very serious injuries relative to other injuries I have seen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">At least a dozen missiles were fired during the attack, which was a retaliation for the killing of a top Iranian general, Qassim Suleimani, by an American drone strike in Baghdad on Jan. 3. The Trump administration at first said there were no injuries, but a week later said several service members were evaluated for possible concussions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Then, days after Mr. Trump\u2019s statements in Davos, the Defense Department <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/24\/world\/middleeast\/iran-iraq-troops-brain-injuries.html\">said that 34<\/a><\/strong><\/span> people had suffered brain injuries. The number was later <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/28\/us\/iran-strike-soldier-injuries-pentagon.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>increased to 50<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/30\/world\/middleeast\/iraq-iran-brain-injuries.html\"> then to 64<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, with military officials saying that the symptoms of traumatic brain injuries could take weeks to appear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The repeated revisions have drawn outrage from some veterans and <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenDuckworth\/status\/1223334406057873414\">senators<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cThe number just keeps going up,\u201d Paul Rieckhoff, the founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PaulRieckhoff\/status\/1226915032384049152\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>said on Twitter<\/strong><\/span><\/a> on Monday. \u201cIt\u2019s time for Congress to demand a full investigation. The public and our military families deserve the truth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Frank Luntz, a longtime Republican strategist, said on Twitter on Monday that a traumatic brain injury \u201ccan have debilitating lifelong effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t hide our veterans\u2019 injuries just to pretend like we\u2019re invincible,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Traumatic brain injuries can result from the powerful changes in atmospheric pressure that accompany an explosion like that from a missile warhead. Only in the last several years has the Pentagon made a considerable effort to understand the injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Mr. Trump\u2019s statements appeared to echo sentiments common in the early years of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, where troops rattled by explosions were visibly uninjured and ushered back to duty, only to have long-term effects from the blasts manifest weeks and months later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper said at a news conference in January that the Pentagon took those types of injuries \u201cvery seriously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The White House did not immediately respond to questions on Monday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/10\/world\/middleeast\/iraq-iran-brain-injuries.html\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First Trump said there were no U.S. casualties.
