Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Two <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">US<\/a> soldiers were killed and six wounded in a so-called insider attack in eastern <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/afghanistan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Afghanistan<\/a>\u2019s Nangarhar province when an Afghan soldier in uniform opened fire late on Saturday, the US military said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A member of the Nangarhar Provincial Council, Ajmal Omer, said the gunman was killed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">There have been numerous attacks by Afghan national army soldiers on their allied partners over the 18 years of Afghanistan\u2019s protracted war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">An Afghan defence ministry official, who was not identified because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the shooter was an Afghan soldier who had argued with the US forces before opening fire. He was not a <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/taliban\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Taliban<\/a> infiltrator, the official said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/us-military\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">US military<\/a> said in a statement: \u201cAn individual in an Afghan uniform opened fire on the combined US and Afghan force with a machine-gun. We are still collecting information and the cause or motive behind the attack is unknown at this time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Omer, who is a member of the provincial council, is from Nangarhar province\u2019s Sherzad district, where he said the incident took place. An Afghan soldier was wounded, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The US military said American and Afghan military personnel were fired on while conducting an operation in Afghanistan\u2019s eastern Nangarhar province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Last July, two US service members were killed by an Afghan soldier in the southern Kandahar province. The shooter was wounded and arrested. In September, three US military personnel were wounded when an member of the Afghan civil order police fired on a military convoy, also in Kandahar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The incident came as <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/washington-dc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Washington <\/a>has sought to find an end to the war in Afghanistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Washington\u2019s peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has been meeting Taliban representatives in the <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/middleeast\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Middle Eastern<\/a> state of <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/qatar\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Qatar<\/a> in recent weeks.
