Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Environmental officials warned 30 years ago the Maldives could be completely covered by water due to global warming-induced sea level rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">That didn\u2019t happen. The Indian Ocean did not swallow the Maldives island chain as predicted by government officials in the 1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In September 1988, the Agence France-Presse (AFP) <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/trove.nla.gov.au\/newspaper\/article\/102074798\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>reported<\/strong><\/span><\/a> a \u201cgradual rise in average sea level is threatening to completely cover this Indian Ocean nation of 1196 small islands within the next 30 years,\u201d based on predictions made by government officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Then-Environmental Affairs Director Hussein Shihab told AFP \u201can estimated rise of 20 to 30 centimetres in the next 20 to 40 years could be \u2018catastrophic\u2019 for most of the islands, which were no more than a metre above sea level.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The article went on to suggest the Maldives, along with its 200,000 inhabitants, could \u201cend\u201d sooner than expected if drinking water supplies dry up by 1992 \u201cas predicted.\u201d Today, more than 417,000 people live in the Maldives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cCall Noah and have him build another Ark,\u201d Daniel Turner, executive director of the pro-energy group Power the Future, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cBring out the Coast Guard. Send all the boogie boards and floaties you can find for the Maldives is going down,\u201d Turner said sarcastically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Maldives are among the island nations often <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/unchronicle.un.org\/article\/small-islands-rising-seas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>held up<\/strong><\/span><\/a> by United Nations officials as being on the \u201cfront-lines\u201d of man-made global warming. The island nation was among the first to apply for Green Climate Fund aid, but the funding hasn\u2019t been flowing, according to The New York Times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cThat\u2019s too long to wait,\u201d Maldives energy and environment minister Thoriq Ibrahim <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/17\/climate\/islands-climate-change-un-bonn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>told<\/strong><\/span><\/a> The Times last year. \u201cThere\u2019s no use having a fund somewhere if you can\u2019t access it quickly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Maldives are indeed low-lying islands with its highest point only reaching about eight feet above sea level. But obviously, decades-old warnings the Maldives were on the verge of being swallowed by the seas didn\u2019t pan out<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A recent <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/4\/4\/eaap9741\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>study<\/strong><\/span><\/a> projected low-lying reef islands, like the Maldives, could become \u201cuninhabitable\u201d by the middle of the 21st Century because too much sea water will get into freshwater drinking supplies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The study projects \u201csea-level rise and wave dynamics over reefs will lead to the annual wave-driven overwash of most atoll islands by the mid-21st century.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However, other research suggest the Maldives and other coral islands may actually be expanding, not sinking into the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">New Zealand researchers <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/02\/09\/study-pacific-islands-getting-bigger-despite-rising-seas\/\">published a study<\/a><\/strong><\/span> earlier this year based on aerial photos and satellite images of Pacific islands over the last four decades that found most atolls they examined were increasing in size.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The results echoed a <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/05\/12\/study-reef-islands-defy-global-warming-and-grow\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>2015 study<\/strong><\/span><\/a> by the same lead author that also found coral island expansion.
