Iran\u2019s government spokesperson, Ali Rabiei called the move \u201c<em>undemocratic<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Unlike Facebook and Twitter, Instagram is not blocked in Iran. Despite this, Twitter\u2019s position on the matter is that as long as users abide by its rules the social media platform will not seek to remove posts. That being said, independent news outlet the\u00a0<em>Grayzone<\/em>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thegrayzone.com\/2020\/01\/12\/us-pressure-social-media-censoring-suspending-venezuela-iran-syria\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>reported<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0that Twitter suspended dozens of accounts run by people in Venezuela, Syria, and Iran\u2014including Iran\u2019s supreme leader\u2014during the first two weeks of January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Instagram removed Soleimani\u2019s own account last April shortly after the U.S. government designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a foreign terrorist organization. Less publicized is the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/01\/iran-parliament-designates-forces-terrorists-200107081230324.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>recent decision<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0by Iran\u2019s parliament to designate all U.S. forces as \u201cterrorists\u201d following the assassination of Soleimani.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The pressure on social media companies to give effect to U.S. sanctions has also led to the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/1\/13\/21063885\/instagram-gofundme-iran-content-soleimani-policies\">removal of posts<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0by Instagram which were posted by outspoken critics of the IRGC, including human rights advocate Emadeddin Baghi. Unsurprisingly, the International Federation of Journalists released a statement declaring Instagram\u2019s actions as going \u201c<em>against global standard principles including freedom of speech and media<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However, Instagram and Facebook are not the only companies cracking down on speech that could be construed as supporting Soleimani. According to the Grayzone\u2019s Ben Norton, a French reader attempted to donate $10 to the independent media outlet, writing \u201c<em>I am making this donation to The Grayzone for the sake of free speech and balanced reporting, particularly in regard to recent events in Iraq and Iran.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">PayPal then froze the payment as it<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenjaminNorton\/status\/1216513068873715712\">did with many others<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is Orwellian. PayPal keeps blocking small donations from our readers to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheGrayzoneNews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TheGrayzoneNews<\/a>. Why? They mention the word in &quot;Iran,&quot; praising our coverage of US warmongering against Iran<\/p>\n<p>One of the donations frozen by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PayPal?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PayPal<\/a> even mentioned &quot;free speech&quot;!<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/79uxrXLQqf\">https:\/\/t.co\/79uxrXLQqf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ben Norton (@BenjaminNorton) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenjaminNorton\/status\/1216513068873715712?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 13, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Around the same time, Facebook also censored a\u00a0<em>Grayzone<\/em>\u00a0video which sought to report on Hezbollah, Iran, and U.S. president Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">According to\u00a0<em>CNN Business<\/em>, Google did not comment on its policy on this issue when contacted. However, YouTube\u2014owned by Google\u2014has also allegedly\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/freedomrideblog\/status\/1216910417915711489\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>removed all\u00a0<em>PressTV<\/em>\u00a0videos<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0with the exception of\u00a0<em>PressTV Francais<\/em>.\u00a0<em>PressTV<\/em>\u00a0is funded by the Iranian government and has been targeted by both Google and YouTube in the past. A brief search by the\u00a0<em>Mind Unleashed<\/em>\u00a0at the time of writing was unable to locate an official\u00a0<em>PressTV<\/em>\u00a0YouTube channel, confirming the assertion that it has been\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/google-shuts-down-press-tv-uks-youtube-account\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>removed<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">As the\u00a0<em>Grayzone<\/em>\u00a0notes in its reports, Silicon Valley Tech companies have for some time been partnering up with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/fair.org\/home\/media-ignore-government-influence-on-facebooks-plan-to-fight-government-influence\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>shadowy think-tanks<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, helping to assist the U.S. government in its apparent bid to control the boundaries of free speech and political dissent. In 2018, Facebook and Twitter jointly shut down a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/who-will-fix-facebook-759916\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>range of antiwar and anti-corruption pages<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0under the guise of fighting spam accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jan\/12\/donald-trump-warns-iran-against-another-massacre-amid-airliner-protests\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>recent warning to Iran<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0not to shut down its Internet makes little sense in the context of what has been described above.
