A third of <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2019\/dec\/23\/sa-fires-adelaide-hills-wine-industry-devastated-as-bushfires-sweep-through\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>the vineyard area<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and dozens of homes were razed in the Adelaide Hills. It is too early for a thorough examination of <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/dec\/24\/heartbreaking-and-heartwarming-animals-rescued-from-australias-bushfires-devastation\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>the impact on wildlife<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, including the many threatened species in the fires\u2019 path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Does this qualify as unprecedented? Plenty of experts say yes, but not all politicians and newspaper columnists are convinced. Last week the acting prime minister, Michael McCormack, <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelmccormack.com.au\/media-releases\/2019\/12\/18\/transcript-sky-news-interview-with-eliza-edwards-18-december-2019\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>assured the nation<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that \u201cwe\u2019ve had these smoke hazes before. We\u2019ve had bushfires before.\u201d After returning from Hawaii, Scott Morrison, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2019\/dec\/23\/scott-morrison-hawaii-holiday-extra-plumbing-contract-friday-afternoon\">acknowledged the fires were severe<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, but also adopted a familiar line: Australia has always had bushfires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">That\u2019s true. But a key question is whether it has always had bushfires like this.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Who says the bushfires are unprecedented?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The firefighting agency in the state worst affected, for starters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The NSW Rural Fire Service <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2019\/dec\/24\/australian-bushfires-the-story-so-far-in-each-state\">says the scale of what has burned in that state<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>is unprecedented at this point of the fire season.
