The UK\u2019s main press regulator has reprimanded The Jewish Chronicle<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span> for \u201csignificantly misleading\u201d claims in reports about supposed anti-Semitism in the Labour Party<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Independent Press Standards Organization<\/strong><\/span><\/a> also called the newspaper\u2019s obstruction of the investigation into a series of articles published this year \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In a ruling on Friday<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, the press body upheld a complaint by a Labour activist named in the articles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Audrey White is a trade unionist<\/strong><\/span><\/a> from Liverpool and a supporter of Jeremy Corbyn<\/strong><\/span><\/a> \u2013 a veteran Palestine solidarity campaigner.<\/span><\/p>\n

The paper smeared her as being behind<\/strong><\/span><\/a> a \u201chard-left plot\u201d and of being at<\/strong><\/span><\/a> \u201cthe center of bullying claims against Jewish MP Dame Louise Ellman\u201d \u2013 then the member of Parliament for White\u2019s Liverpool Riverside constituency.<\/span><\/p>\n

White told The Electronic Intifada that the ruling was a damning indictment of the paper. It \u201creveals the origins of the false narrative that Louise Ellman was forced out of Jeremy Corbyn\u2019s Labour Party because she was bullied in our constituency meetings,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Labour members had no disagreement with Ellman \u201cbecause of her religion, but we had real differences regarding her political views. These vile attempts to discredit party members should be exposed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Louise Ellman<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the chairperson of Labour Friends of Israel<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, has for years helped drive a witch hunt against Corbyn<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and the party grassroots over \u201cLabour anti-Semitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

White said that The Jewish Chronicle\u2019s<\/em> \u201cfalsified account of our constituency meeting fed into the narrative that Riverside CLP was anti-Semitic and that we drove a Jewish MP out of the Labour Party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSignificantly misleading\u201d<\/h2>\n

She said that \u201cthis lie was repeated over and over again by all the mainstream media. If anyone had any decency they would admit they were wrong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In a now widely discredited episod<\/strong><\/span>e<\/a> of Panorama<\/em>, the BBC in July put Ellman\u2019s claims at the center of a film which portrayed Labour as an anti-Semitic party.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ellman, for years a leading Israel lobbyist, quit Labour in October<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, claiming that party leader Jeremy Corbyn \u201cis not fit to serve as our prime minister.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The press regulator found that The Jewish Chronicle\u2019s<\/em> claim<\/a><\/strong><\/span> White had \u201crepeatedly interrupted\u201d Ellman at a local party meeting was \u201csignificantly misleading.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, the ruling acknowledges, White had only spoken in response \u201cto an open invitation to ask questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The paper\u2019s claim<\/a><\/strong><\/span> that White had received a \u201cnumber of formal warnings from the party over allegations of bullying\u201d was also found to be \u201csignificantly misleading.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But only one of the four articles ruled inaccurate had been deleted<\/a><\/strong><\/span> from the paper\u2019s website as of midday on Monday. A copy of the inaccurate deleted article can be read in an online archive<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Friday, The Jewish Chronicle<\/em> published the ruling<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, as required.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the newspaper does not appear to have apologized or corrected the misleading articles, two<\/strong><\/span><\/a> of which remai<\/strong><\/span>n<\/a> online. One appeared in print.<\/span><\/p>\n

The regulator also found the paper had broken its rules by refusing to correct its inaccurate and misleading claims about White multiple times, despite being informed about them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Breaches<\/h2>\n

The press regulator strongly reprimanded The Jewish Chronicle<\/em> for obstructing its investigation of White\u2019s complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ruling says the newspaper failed \u201con a number of occasions, to answer questions put to it\u201d and delayed giving responses.<\/span><\/p>\n

It slammed the paper\u2019s conduct as \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jewish Chronicle\u2019s<\/em> editor did not reply to a request for comment emailed to him on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n
