Given at the Anti-Defamation League\u2019s summit on \u201canti-Semitism\u201d, Sacha Baron Cohen\u2019s speech about \u201chate crimes\u201d was actually a call for tighter control of the Internet. In effect Cohen is calling for more censorship on the pretext of curbing \u201chate speech\u201d.<\/h5>\n
\"\"<\/a>And what precisely is hate speech? Well that’s the thing because what many regard as hateful others might see as perfectably reasonable. For example, while some might consider Sacha Baron Cohen\u2019s portrayal of Arab leaders as mocking, others might see it as offensive. So where does one draw the line and more importantly, who decides?<\/h5>\n
Of course the irony is that Facebook and other tech giants are already exercising control over online content; so much so that Mark Zuckerberg has been likened to Orwell\u2019s \u201cBig Brother<\/a><\/span>\u201d.<\/h5>\n
There have been numerous reports about Facebook practising what amounts to censorship<\/span><\/a>, and Facebook isn\u2019t alone. Other tech giants like Google have also been accused of practising “centralised censorship<\/span><\/a>“.<\/h5>\n
Yet as the following report reveals, Sacha Baron Cohen has just denounced the Internet as being \u201cthe greatest propaganda machine in history”.<\/h5>\n
What he really means is that the Internet is allowing the exchange of information and ideas that have not been officially sanctioned. For example to question whether six million Jews died in the Holocaust is now deemed hate speech in some countries and autocratic regimes frequently shutdown the Internet<\/a><\/span> when their authority is challenged.<\/h5>\n
That’s why Sacha Baron Cohen is calling for tighter control of the Internet<\/h5>\n
Essentially, the elite are worried about the proliferation of ideas and information that they cannot control. They already control all the corporate media giants and most of the online news portals too. However, they cannot entirely control the exchange of information and ideas online and that\u2019s where Sacha Baron Cohen comes in.<\/h5>\n

Sacha Baron Cohen<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a> has denounced tech giants Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google as \u201cthe greatest propaganda machine in history\u201d and culpable for a surge in \u201cmurderous attacks on religious and ethnic minorities\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Baron Cohen was speaking on Thursday at Never Is Now, the Anti-Defamation League\u2019s summit on antisemitism and hate in New York, where he was presented with the organisation\u2019s international leadership award. He said that \u201chate crimes are surging, as are murderous attacks on religious and ethnic minorities\u201d and that \u201call this hate and violence is being facilitated by a handful of internet companies that amount to the greatest propaganda machine in history\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe algorithms these platforms depend on deliberately amplify the type of content that keeps users engaged \u2013 stories that appeal to our baser instincts and that trigger outrage and fear. It\u2019s why YouTube recommended videos<\/strong><\/span><\/a> by the conspiracist Alex Jones billions of times. It\u2019s why fake news outperforms real news, because studies show that lies spread faster than truth \u2026 As one headline put it, just think what Goebbels could have done with Facebook.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you pay them, Facebook will run any \u2018political\u2019 ad you want<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, even if it\u2019s a lie,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd they\u2019ll even help you micro-target those lies to their users for maximum effect. Under this twisted logic, if Facebook were around in the 1930s, it would have allowed Hitler to post 30-second ads on his \u2018solution\u2019 to the \u2018Jewish problem\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
