First of all, Iran developed its own indigenous UAV’s and phased array radar systems.

Now, after unveiling the Bavar 373 air defence system, which according to some reports outclasses the S-300 and in some respects rivals the S-400, Iran has just unveiled a new domestically manufactured training jet, the Yasin.

This will be worth watching because Iran has shown its ability to develop basic military technology into something more. Just as we’ve seen Iran’s air defence technology grow increasingly sophisticated and capable in recent years, the Yasin could mark the beginning of the same steady improvement in Iran’s air power.

First of all Iran is not claiming a rival to the U.S. F-22 or F-35, the Yasin is just a jet trainer. However, it now appears that like the British Hawk trainer, the Yasin can also be used in a Close Air Support combat role. Whether it will be quite capable as the Hawk is another matter, but if the Yasin can deliver air strikes as well as train pilots it will still be a major boost to Iran’s air combat capability.

It may still be some years yet before the Yasin’s combat capability is perfected, however. After all, it took nearly nine years for Iran to develop and unveil the complete Bavar 373. Nonetheless, it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that before 2028 or sooner Iran could unveil a jet that rivals or even surpasses the venerable Hawk.
