Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Billionaire philanthropist and liberal activist George Soros says Elizabeth Warren is the top Democrat in the field vying to take on President Donald Trump in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cShe has emerged as the clear-cut person to beat,\u201d he told The New York Times in an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/25\/business\/dealbook\/george-soros-interview.html\" data-type=\"\" aria-label=\"\">interview<\/a><\/strong><\/span> published Friday. \u201cI don\u2019t take a public stance, but I do believe that she is the most qualified to be president.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Soros, a former currency trader and the target of numerous right-wing conspiracy theories, does not consider his position to be an endorsement. He said he will not endorse any candidate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cI don\u2019t express my views generally because I have to live with whoever the electorate chooses,\u201d said the 89-year-old Hungarian-American, who in 1979 established the Open Society Foundations <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opensocietyfoundations.org\/\" data-type=\"\" aria-label=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>to help countries transition to democracy<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Financiers are divided on Warren, who has proposed <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/05\/these-are-the-taxes-elizabeth-warren-has-proposed-for-2020.html\" data-type=\"\" aria-label=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>a bevy of new taxes<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and criticized corporate greed<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#39;m fighting for an economy and a government that works for all of us, not just the wealthy and well-connected. I&#39;m not afraid of anonymous quotes, and wealthy donors don&#39;t get to buy this process. I won&#39;t back down from fighting for the big, structural change we need. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nx7GczQhHl\">https:\/\/t.co\/nx7GczQhHl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Elizabeth Warren (@ewarren) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ewarren\/status\/1177329103759958018?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 26, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">But Soros has previously expressed views in line with the progressive Massachusetts senator, and has long called for the government to increase his taxes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In June, Soros was among the wealthy individuals who signed a <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@letterforawealthtax\/an-open-letter-to-the-2020-presidential-candidates-its-time-to-tax-us-more-6eb3a548b2fe\" data-type=\"\" aria-label=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>letter<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in support of Warren\u2019s wealth-tax proposal. That letter, billed as \u201cnonpartisan,\u201d also noted that it should not be construed as an endorsement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Warren has shot up in the polls recently and is now in second place in national surveys, behind former Vice President Joe Biden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In the interview with the Times, Soros also criticized Trump, and in particular his foreign policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cTrump is still doing a tremendous amount of damage,\u201d he said. He added that Trump\u2019s decision to pull U.S. troops from Syria earlier this month \u201chas been devastating for America\u2019s influence in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Warren\u2019s campaign declined to comment.
