German Chancellor Angela Merkel says her attempt to create a multicultural society has “utterly failed,” and that too little had been required of immigrants who refuse to integrate into German culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Merkel told an audience of young members of her Christian Democrats (CDU) that allowing people of differing cultural backgrounds to live side by side without such integration was a huge mistake, according to\u00a0Reuters<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>,\u00a0which notes that approximately four million Muslims live in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This (multicultural) approach has failed, utterly failed<\/strong>,” said Merkel during the meeting in Potsdam, south of Berlin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Merkel faces pressure from within her CDU to take a tougher line on immigrants who don\u2019t show a willingness to adapt to German society and her comments appeared intended to pacify her critics.<\/span><\/p>\n

She said too little had been required of immigrants in the past and repeated her usual line that they should learn German<\/strong> in order to get by in school and have opportunities on the labor market. –Reuters<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The stunning admission comes\u00a0weeks after<\/a> <\/strong>the former director of Germany’s foreign intelligence service,\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Dr August Hanning, suggested Merkel had created a “security crisis” in Germany<\/strong>\u00a0due to her open-border policy. (Summit News<\/strong><\/span><\/a>)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have seen the consequences of this decision in terms of German public opinion and internal security \u2013 we experience problems very day,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have criminals, terrorist suspects and people who use multiple identities. Those who carried out the Berlin attacks used 12 different identities,\u201d added Hanning.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile things are tighter today, we still have 300,000 people in Germany of whose identities we cannot be sure. That\u2019s a massive security risk,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he warned.<\/span><\/p>\n

Merkel has been treading a fine line between German nationalists and Islam – telling natives\u00a0to accept that mosques are now a part of their landscape, though also saying on Saturday that\u00a0the education of unemployed Germans should take precedent over that of foreign workers<\/strong>\u00a0(though adding that Germany couldn’t get by without skilled foreign workers).<\/span><\/p>\n

And while the German chancellor speaks out of one side of her mouth,\u00a0her Labor Minister Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>\u00a0(CDU) suggested that the country should\u00a0lower the barriers to entry<\/strong>\u00a0for foreign workers in order to supplement the country’s lack of skilled labor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“For a few years, more people have been leaving our country than entering it,” she told the\u00a0Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung,\u00a0adding “Wherever it is possible, we must lower the entry hurdles for those who bring the country forward.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Christian Social Union (CSU) chairman Horst Seehofer, meanwhile,\u00a0rejects all attempts to relax immigraion laws<\/strong>, saying last week that Germany has no more room for people from “alien cultures.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), Germany lacks approximately 400,000 skilled workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
