In my podcast<\/a><\/span> this week, I\u2019ve got comments on various kinds of lunacy going on (appointing illegal aliens<\/a> <\/span>to state policy-making boards<\/span><\/a> in Gavin Newsom<\/a><\/span>\u2019s California, closing<\/a><\/span>, and presumably emptying onto the streets, a prison in De Blasio\u2019s New York) and general sense that the world is going nuts. But, trying to look on the bight side, there are signs of resistance to the general lunacy.<\/h5>\n
I very much enjoyed this news item from the literary world. The actual literary item here is a novel, title Make Your Home Among Strangers<\/span><\/em><\/a>. It came out three or four years ago. I regret to say I have not read it, so I can\u2019t pass any literary judgment on it.<\/h5>\n
The author of this novel is a young lady named Jennine Capo Crucet<\/span><\/a>. The book\u2019s Amazon page<\/span><\/a> tells us she, quote, \u201cwas born to Cuban parents and raised in Miami, Florida,\u201d and is a graduate of Cornell University. From one of her columns<\/span><\/a> at the New York Times<\/em> it seems she went to Cornell in 1999 [Did I Choose the Wrong College?<\/span><\/em><\/a> April 28, 2018]<\/h5>\n
As I said, I haven\u2019t read the novel and don\u2019t plan to. From the reviews quoted on that Amazon page, I gather that it concerns a Cuban-American girl, raised in Miami, entering a high-ranking northeastern university in 1999, struggling with issues of race and class.<\/h5>\n
So apparently Ms. Crucet [Email her<\/span><\/a>\/Tweet her<\/span><\/a>] didn\u2019t perform any very strenuous stretching of her imagination when writing the book. It\u2019s autobiographical<\/a><\/span>.<\/h5>\n
That\u2019s not a crime, not even a literary crime. Wikipedia has a list of seventy-odd famous autobiographical novels<\/a><\/span>, some of them worthy literary classics like David Copperfield<\/em>.<\/h5>\n
This novel of Ms. Crucet\u2019s, however, seems to have a theme of whiny resentment against white non-Hispanic America. According to her website<\/span><\/a>, the novel\u2019s Latina protagonist<\/a><\/span><\/h5>\n
\u2026begins her first semester at Rawlings College, but the privileged environment feels utterly foreign, as does her new awareness of herself as a minority.<\/h5>\n
More recently\u2014just this September, in fact\u2014Ms. Crucet published another book, title My Time Among the Whites<\/em><\/a><\/span>, described on her personal website as \u201ca collection of essays on feeling like an \u2018accidental\u2019 American and the tectonic edges of identity in a society centered on whiteness.\u201d<\/h5>\n
(Ms. Crucet appears from her picture to be a white Cuban<\/span><\/a>, like Marco Rubio<\/span><\/a>, Ted Cruz<\/span>,<\/a> and Roan Garcia-Quintana<\/span><\/a>, who is so white that the SPLC has condemned him<\/span>.<\/a>)<\/h5>\n

This kind of thing will get you on the required-reading lists of our colleges. That earlier book, the novel, is already on them. I\u2019m betting that My Time Among the Whites<\/em>, soon will be, too, if it isn\u2019t already. How could the kind of people who compile college required-reading lists resist a title like that<\/em>?<\/h5>\n
Well, one of the colleges that has Ms. Crucet\u2019s novel on its required-reading list is Georgia Southern University. The author was accordingly invited to the Statesboro campus of that university on October 9th to give a talk about her books.<\/h5>\n
The event did not<\/em> go well. In the Q&A session following her talk, several students, amazingly. pushed back against Ms. Crucet\u2019s anti-white sentiments. Sample question:<\/h5>\n
\u201cI noticed that you made a lot of generalizations about the majority of white people being privileged. What makes you believe that it\u2019s okay to come to a college campus, like this, when we are supposed to be promoting diversity on this campus, which is what we\u2019re taught. I don\u2019t understand what the purpose of this was.\u201d<\/h5>\n

After more of what Ms. Crucet later called \u201caggressive and ignorant comments,\u201d several students walked out in protest against her. They congregated outside and commenced burning copies of Ms. Crucet\u2019s books on a barbecue grill [Georgia college students burned the books of a Latina author<\/span><\/em><\/a>, by Amir Vera and Natalie Johnson, CNN, October 14, 2019].<\/h5>\n
