(AP Photo\/Evan Vucci)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Former Secretary of State <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/rex-tillerson\" data-nid=\"344964\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Rex Tillerson<\/strong><\/span><\/a> said\u00a0during a Tuesday interview with a panel of Harvard professors that Israeli Prime Minister <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/benjamin-bibi-netanyahu\" data-nid=\"440533\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong><\/span><\/a> \u201cplayed\u201d <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\" data-nid=\"261287\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>President Trump<\/strong><\/span><\/a> numerous times, <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2019\/09\/rex-tillerson-details-his-frustrations-on-iran-israel-russia-and-his-revamp-of-the-state-department\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>according<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to The Harvard Gazette.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Tillerson said Netanyahu was \u201ca bit Machiavellian\u201d and cultivated relationships with world leaders he anticipated would be useful later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Tillerson added that Israeli officials would use misinformation if they believed it was necessary to win U.S. officials over to their side of an issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cThey did that with the president on a couple of occasions, to persuade him that \u2018We\u2019re the good guys, they\u2019re the bad guys.\u2019 We later exposed it to the president so he understood, \u2018You\u2019ve been played,\u2019 \u201d Tillerson said. \u201cIt bothers me that an ally that\u2019s that close and important to us would do that to us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In a tweet Thursday, the official Twitter account of the prime minister tweeted &#8220;Israel *is* the good guy&#8221; in response to Tillerson&#8217;s quote.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Secretary Tillerson, Israel *is* the good guy. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rgaVgQgWi9\">pic.twitter.com\/rgaVgQgWi9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; PM of Israel (@IsraeliPM) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IsraeliPM\/status\/1174752218324635648?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 19, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Tillerson said that when he first entered office he was optimistic about the potential for peace in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cI did believe that we were at a moment in time where perhaps we could chart a way where the Arab world could support an outcome that the Palestinians might not think was perfect \u2014 and in the past, if it wasn\u2019t perfect, it didn\u2019t happen \u2014 but with enough encouragement, pressure from the Arab world, that we could get it close enough that the Palestinians would finally agree,\u201d he told the panel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">But Tillerson said his lack of a relationship with Trump kept the State Department from making progress on this front during his time in office.
