We had reached a similar conclusion to Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, quoted below. While Trump, Bolton and Pompeo talk tough over Iran, we suspect that the U.S. military command is nowhere near as confident about confronting it.<\/h5>\n
After all, they will be doing the fighting while America\u2019s politicians will be safe and secure in Washington D.C.<\/h5>\n
Iran\u2019s military capabilities and technological know-how have grown considerably in recent years. There is absolutely no comparison between Iran today and Iraq in 2003 and U.S. military commanders know this. Even if they don\u2019t publicly acknowledge it they understand that conflict with Iran could potentially result in catastrophic failure, a debacle that could be worse than Vietnam.<\/h5>\n
That is not something that Trump with all his vanity would want to be remembered for.<\/h5>\n
Thus the notion that U.S. commanders talked him out of military action against Iran is entirely plausible. They know the risks involved and the prospects of how that would damage his reputation was probably what dissuaded Trump from ordering a strike. Ed.<\/h5>\n

Top Commander: Trump Dissuaded from War after US Army’s Assessment of Iran’s Power<\/h2>\n

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri said that the US army’s assessment of Iran’s retaliation power and not Trump’s compassion prevented the US president from starting a war after the IRGC downed the American spy drone in June.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The day when the drone was downed, the US president was on the brink of a decision (to attack Iran) and the biggest lie was that they did not do it to prevent the death of 100 people, while the decision was the result of intelligence assessment of the US Army and after they briefed the US president about the outcomes of their attack and about Iran’s missile response, in islands, in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz and the regional states where Iran’s arms are deployed,” General Baqeri said, addressing a forum in Tehran on Wednesday.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“They sat with him (Trump) in two 2 to 3-hour sessions and explained to him that he cannot attack Iran,” he added.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Elsewhere, General Baqeri said that Iran is weakening the US and Israel’s influence in the region on a daily basis, adding that the resistance front is advancing well.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also dismissed allegations that Iran has sent military aid to Yemen to fight against the Saudi-led coalition, asking how a 9-meter-long missile can be sent to a country (Yemen) which is under the strongest siege that even prevents imports of medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n

“These are illusions of some people,” General Baqeri said, adding that the Islamic Revolution merely supports the Yemeni resistance forces spiritually.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force shot down an American spy drone over the territorial waters of Iran near the Strait of Hormuz at dawn on June 20.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the incident, US President Donald Trump said the US air force was \u201ccocked and loaded\u201d to attack three Iranian targets, but he called off the strike with 10 minutes to spare after being told that the airstrike might kill as many as 150 people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump said in a series of tweets that he decided that the death toll was not a proportionate response to the Iranian shooting down of a US spy drone off the Iranian coast.<\/span><\/p>\n

After Trump’s remarks, Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said that his forces could have shot down a US P8 aircraft<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/a>with 35 on board which was violating Iran\u2019s airspace, but decided to shoot down the drone to only send a message to Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe intended to send a message to American terrorists in the region,\u201d Brigadier General Hajizadeh said, adding that his forces had also traced a military P8 aircraft violating the airspace of Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlong with the American drone was an American P8 aircraft with 35 on board, and it was also violating our airspace and we could have downed it too,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cBut we did not do (shoot down) it, because our aim was to warn the terrorist forces of the US.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

General Hajizadeh also stressed that Iran was not after war but was fully ready to defend itself, adding that the fate of the downed US spy drone was waiting for any intruding flying object.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur response to anything trespassing Iranian territory is like this, and if such acts of aggression\u00a0are repeated, our response will also be the same,” General Hajizadeh said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t embrace war but we are ready to fully defend the country,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We possess a collection of US drones which is a proof that US has violated Iran\u2019s airspace and shows that they don\u2019t want to respect the international law,\u201d General Hajizadeh said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf such an aggression\u00a0is repeated, we will add other US (military) products to complete this collection,\u201d he noted.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe US measure was in violation of international law and we acted according to our legitimate responsibility,\u201d General Hajizadeh said, adding, \u201cIt is possible that a US general or some operators were behind this American aggression, we don\u2019t know that. But that measure (intruding into Iranian airspace) is a violation of international aviation rules by a spy drone which then received our natural response.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that his country had retrieved parts of the spy drone that was shot down from the country’s territorial waters, rejecting Washington’s claim that the aircraft was targeted in international waters.<\/span><\/p>\n

“(The) US drone took off from UAE in stealth mode and violated Iranian airspace,” Zarif wrote on Twitter, adding that the drone “was targeted near… Kouh-e Mobarak” region in the Central district of Jask in\u00a0Hormuzgan province after the aircraft violated Iran’s airspace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zarif even provided the coordinates where the US aircraft was intercepted, and added, “We’ve retrieved sections of the US military drone in OUR territorial waters where it was shot down.”<\/span><\/p>\n
