Poland has long wanted a permanent U.S. military base<\/span><\/a> within its border. Although the U.S. currently maintains around 4,000 service personnel in the country, on a rotational basis, Warsaw has offered $2 Billion towards establishing a more permanent U.S. military presence.<\/h5>\n
If Poland now contributes to the naval alliance to escort shipping through the Straits of Hormuz, Trump could reciprocate with that new base in Poland.<\/h5>\n
For Trump it’s a win, win.<\/h5>\n
However, a permanent U.S. military base in Poland would be seen as deeply provocative by Moscow. While an international naval alliance patrolling right next to its territorial waters in the Straits of Hormuz would likewise be seen as a direct challenge by Tehran. All the more so as in addition to Britain and America and maybe Poland too, the naval alliance would also include Tehran\u2019s archenemy Israel.<\/h5>\n
Iranians would view that the same way that Britons would see the Russian and Chinese naval vessels escorting shipping through the English Channel. Or the way Americans might view Russian and Iranian naval ships escorting shipping through the Gulf of Mexico. Ed<\/h5>\n

Poland is reportedly considering supporting a US-led mission to protect the passage of ships in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Iran, but it has not made a formal decision yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFrom our point of view actions to stabilize this region would be justified,\u201d a spokeswoman at Poland\u2019s foreign ministry told Reuters in a statement on August 16.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to wait to work out whether, and if so, in what form Poland could join such an initiative,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear when Poland, which under the ruling populist Law and Justice (PiS) has been highly supportive of the Trump administration in contrast to the caution shown in Brussels, will make a decision on the matter. Poland\u2019s Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz first made the comments about possible participation to German news agency dpa on August 16. Poland has in the past offered military support to US-led missions in places including Iraq and Afghanistan. During Donald Trump\u2019s disagreements with Germany, officials in his administration have made references to possibly transferring US troops from Germany to Poland.<\/span><\/p>\n

The UK has already said it will link up with the US for a maritime security mission that would safeguard the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz\u2014a chokepoint via which around a fifth of the oil that heads for world markets is shipped, leaving it exposed to fallout from Washington\u2019s standoff with Tehran. The British previously argued for a European mission but changed their approach after Boris Johnson became UK prime minister in July and adopted a foreign policy strategy that includes stepping up the country\u2019s drive to complete Brexit and working more closely with the US.<\/span><\/p>\n

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, meanwhile, has stated that Germany will not take part in a US-led naval initiative in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/span><\/p>\n

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on August 14 that she believed the idea of such a European mission would be discussed again at informal meetings of European foreign and defence ministers in Finland later this month.<\/span><\/p>\n
