A series of incidents that have occurred in close proximity to each other over the past several days are leading many to believe that technology is failing society and that U.S. infrastructure is collapsing faster than previously believed.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday, a wide swath of Manhattan\u2019s West Side was plunged into darkness for several hours, and the electric company officials responsible for providing the power \u2014 Con Edison \u2014 are not sure why the failure occurred.<\/span><\/p>\n

As reported by the New York Post<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, the company said in a statement late Sunday morning that it \u201cwill be conducting a diligent and vigorous investigation to determine the root cause of the incident.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Further, ConEd, as the company is known locally, said:<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the next several days and weeks, our engineers and planners will carefully examine the data and equipment performance relating to this event, and will share our findings with regulators and the public.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Ironically, the outage Saturday occurred on the 42nd anniversary of a large days-long outage in 1977 that affected all of New York City, leading to rioting, looting, and robberies.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a separate report, the New York Post<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a> said ConEd warned on Monday that more outages could be coming as summer heat waves are expected over the next several weeks, leading analysts to believe that the problem is much more serious.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect there could be service outages \u2014 those things happen during heat waves,\u201d said Mike Clendenin, chief spokesman for ConEd during an appearance on local media.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, those things aren\u2019t supposed<\/em> to happen in a first-world country \u2014 let alone an internationally renowned city like the Big Apple.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clendenin claimed that ConEd invests $2 billion every year<\/em> to prevent blackouts and prepare for higher electricity demands during peak summer periods. But when you\u2019re out there telling people that, hey, the power<\/strong><\/span><\/a> just may fail<\/em> anyway, no matter how much you say you\u2019re investing in \u2018preparedness,\u2019 your reassurance rings hollow<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Technology is great \u2014 when\u00a0it works<\/h2>\n

Meanwhile, a \u201cmysterious outage\u201d has left the European Union\u2019s GPS satellites out of service for days, ZDNet<\/em> is reporting. The Galileo global navigation satellite system on Sunday was in its fourth day of being out. And as of this writing<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, all 24 satellites in the constellation were either \u201cnot usable,\u201d \u201cnot available,\u201d or undergoing \u201ctesting\u201d (just two were being tested; the vast majority weren\u2019t available or usable).<\/span><\/p>\n

Also as of this writing, the European GNSS Agency (GSA) hasn\u2019t published information explaining why the constellation is out of service, what caused it, or \u2014 importantly \u2014 when it will be fixed. The agency has alternated between warnings, advising use of the constellation\u2019s signals at \u201cusers\u2019 own risk\u201d or not at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s notable is that the Galileo system is not very old; it was launched in 2016. It is the UE\u2019s alternative to the American GPS (Global Position System) and Russia\u2019s GLONASS.<\/span><\/p>\n

As ZDNet<\/em> noted, the loss of the Galileo system came as \u201cwidespread GPS outages were reported across Israel, Iran, Iraq, and Syria at the end of June.\u201d The Israelis have blamed the interference that country is experiencing on Russia instead of a technical problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is possible that the EU system is being spoofed \u2014 taken over and manipulated or otherwise tampered with \u2014 but the fact remains that the technology is essentially brand new and it is already failing.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the U.S., analysts have been warning for years that infrastructure is collapsing<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and that our most densely populated regions are at risk for total blackouts. In 2017, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave the U.S. a grade of \u201cD+\u201d on its widely-recognized \u201cInfrastructure Report Card,\u201d meaning that it\u2019s a \u201cvery lousy score,\u201d according to the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n
