On 12 July, former BBC<\/em> presenter Anna Brees spoke out against\u00a0Panorama<\/em> and its \u201cincredibly suspect\u201d episode on Jeremy Corbyn.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUtterly aghast\u201d<\/h3>\n

Speaking to The Canary<\/em>, Brees, who turned down an offer to rejoin the BBC<\/em> in 2014, said:<\/span><\/p>\n

I am absolutely, utterly aghast of what I\u2019ve seen just of Panorama.<\/span><\/p>\n

She continued:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Labour press office saying that they\u2019ve doctored an email. I\u2019m not surprised on what they\u2019ve done with the antisemitism situation. \u2026 It\u2019s just like all the other stuff they do\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the day, I\u2019ve seen enough and I\u2019ve heard enough from those who have been involved and asked to contribute how they\u2019ve had a very clear agenda right from day one. And I think they are incredibly suspect<\/span><\/p>\n

In its latest Panorama<\/em>, which aired on 10 July, the BBC<\/em> stands accused<\/strong><\/span><\/a> of \u201cdoctoring\u201d an internal Labour email. The party says<\/strong><\/span><\/a> the BBC<\/em>\u2018s version \u2018completely misrepresents\u2019 its contents. Indeed, the programme edited<\/a><\/strong><\/span> out the Jewish identity of the people in question, who were accused of antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n

The BBC<\/em> denies this and rejects Brees\u2019 accusations, telling The Canary<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n

The BBC stands by its journalism and we completely reject any accusations of bias or dishonesty\u2026 The programme [Panorama] adhered to the BBC\u2019s editorial guidelines, including a full right of reply for the Labour Party.<\/span><\/p>\n

We reject any claims Panorama took any of the evidence out of context.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, in its latest episode on Labour, the BBC<\/em> ignored the broader picture. For instance, it didn\u2019t mention that disciplinary cases relating to antisemitism among Labour members since September 2015 relate<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to 0.06% of party\u2019s 540,000-strong membership<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Labour says<\/strong><\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

This represents a tiny minority, but one antisemite is one too many, and we will continue to act against this repugnant form of racism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Critcising the latest Panorama, Labour accused<\/a><\/strong><\/span> the BBC<\/em> of malicious propaganda:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Panorama programme and the BBC have engaged in deliberate and malicious representations designed to mislead the public.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA big shock\u201d<\/h3>\n

Brees, who also worked for ITV<\/em> for six years, also said:<\/span><\/p>\n

It was my dream to work for BBC Panorama. And now I couldn\u2019t think of anything more abhorrent than working for them. I mean it\u2019s a big shock\u2026 I can never forget, when I got that job at the BBC it was the most incredible thing. You\u2019ve got to beat 200 people to get it<\/span><\/p>\n

Brees, author of Making the News<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, pointed to previous episodes of Panorama to prove her point. In a video with journalist Robert Stuart, Brees questioned a 2013 Panorama episode entitled Saving Syria\u2019s Children<\/em>. Stuart alleges that the BBC<\/em> broadcast faked injuries<\/strong><\/span><\/a> of children in Syria, while the UK parliament was considering its foreign policy towards the country:<\/span><\/p>\n

Freelance producer for the BBC<\/em> Victor Lewis-Smith also threatened<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to tear up his contract unless the BBC<\/em> adequately explained the footage.<\/span><\/p>\n

The BBC<\/em> denies Stuart\u2019s claims, saying<\/strong><\/span><\/a> there\u2019s:<\/span><\/p>\n

absolutely no evidence that any part of the programme was fabricated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sexual abuse smears?<\/h3>\n

Brees also pointed to another Panorama<\/em> episode that the BBC<\/em> was planning about far-right Tommy Robinson<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, who\u2019s real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the episode, BBC<\/em> journalist John Sweeney was talking to a source at a lunch date. The source told Sweeney she had a recording of an argument she had with Robinson.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Sweeney didn\u2019t know was that the source was secretly filming<\/strong><\/span><\/a> him at the restaurant. And he said<\/a><\/strong><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n

We can clip that bit. My view about that is, we\u2019re doing a kind of gender, a kind of sexual thing against Tommy Robinson<\/span><\/p>\n

In response, Yaxley-Lennon said<\/a><\/span><\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

You tried to turn a normal argument into a sexual matter\u2026 do you think before you destroy a man\u2019s life?<\/span><\/p>\n

Sweeney denies the accusation, claiming<\/a><\/strong><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n

You misunderstand me. So what I was trying to do was to say to that source that if necessary we would change her gender to turn her for example, into a man. I\u2019ve done that on regular occasions\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, Yaxley-Lennon stokes<\/strong><\/span><\/a> anti-Muslim prejudice for money and must be condemned at every turn. And, speaking about a protest Yaxley-Lennon organised against the BBC<\/em>, the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said<\/a> they \u201croundly condemn Tommy Robinson\u2026 and his fellow, far-right thugs who intend to intimidate staff at the corporation, particularly those working on Panorama\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, journalistic integrity is universal \u2013 it doesn\u2019t just apply to our friends. And every mis-step we make as journalists can empower dangerous people like him and allow him to claim victimhood legitimately.<\/span><\/p>\n

This series of evidence-based claims against the BBC<\/em> suggest the broadcaster is not meeting basic standards of journalism. And worse, these missteps are taking on the appearance of wilful political interference.<\/span><\/p>\n
