In the heat of a debate about Gaza this week, London Mayor Boris Johnson declared himself \u201ca Zionist\u201d on morning radio, before distancing himself from Israel\u2019s actions, which he called \u201cdisproportionate\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on LBC, Johnson said: \u201cI am a passionate Zionist. I am a supporter of Israel. I believe in its existence. I\u2019ve been on a kibbutz for heaven\u2019s sake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pressed on Prime Minister David Cameron\u2019s refusal to criticise Israel\u2019s actions in the Gaza Strip, he added: \u201cI can\u2019t for the life of me see how this can be a sensible strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think what has been happening in Gaza is disproportionate. I think it\u2019s ugly and tragic and I don\u2019t think it will do Israel any good in the long-run.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
