Donald Trump<\/span><\/a> has said a war with Iran<\/a> would cause \u201cobliteration like you\u2019ve never seen before\u201d, adding\u00a0that he has no desire for conflict\u00a0as tensions between Washington<\/a> and Tehran<\/a>\u00a0continue\u00a0to escalate.<\/span><\/p>\n

The US president\u2019s comments come after he abruptly cancelled military strikes against three Iranian targets<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>on Thursday night.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 73-year-old claimed he halted the retaliatory attack\u00a0because the strikes\u00a0would\u00a0have killed 150 people.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not looking for war, and if there is, it\u2019ll be obliteration like you\u2019ve never seen before. But I\u2019m not looking to do that,\u201d he\u00a0said in an interview with\u00a0NBC\u2019s Meet the Press<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Iran shot down\u00a0an unmanned\u00a0US drone on Thursday and claimed the Global Hawk surveillance aircraft was destroyed over Tehran\u2019s<\/a> territory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Washington claims the drone was shot down in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The clash has sparked fears of direct military conflict between the US<\/a> and Iran, but Mr Trump\u2019s decision to cancel the strikes<\/a><\/strong><\/span> has raised hopes of a diplomatic solution to the crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI said you know what…they shot down an unmanned drone…and here we are sitting with 150 dead people,\u201d Mr Trump said, according to NBC.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

“And I didn\u2019t like it, I didn\u2019t think it was proportionate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Trump discussed the cancelled military strikes in a series of early morning tweets<\/strong><\/span><\/a> on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were cocked & loaded to retaliate,\u201d the president said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTen minutes before the strike I stopped it, not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone. I am in no hurry, our military is rebuilt, new, and ready to go, by far the best in the world,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran has said\u00a0it will\u00a0respond to any US threat against it, according to the country\u2019s state media.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not allow any violation against Iran\u2019s borders,\u201d a foreign ministry spokesperson said on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRegardless of any decision they make, we will not allow the Islamic Republic\u2019s territory to be violated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Strait of Hormuz was also\u00a0at the centre of an earlier clash, after Washington accused Iran of a spate of attacks against oil tankers passing through the strategic Gulf region.<\/span><\/p>\n
