It\u2019s trying establish a consensus to blame Iran, as a pretext for military action against it.<\/h5>\n<h5>However, not everyone is buying into the U.S. version of events. Especially as the Japanese ship\u2019s operators have flatly contradicted US claims about mines.<\/h5>\n<h5>Yutaka Katada, president of Kokuka Sangyo, told reporters on Friday that sailors on board the oil tanker saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/461845-kokuka-owner-rejects-mine-attack\/\"><em><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">\u201cflying objects\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/a> just before the ship caught fire.<\/h5>\n<h5>As a result the U.S. is having problems convincing others of its version of events. So far only Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom have voiced their support. With the UK announcing that it will <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><a style=\"color: #ffff00;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/royal-navy-special-force-heads-to-the-gulf-as-tensions-escalate-xgpll0gkj\">deploy 100 Royal Marines<\/a><\/span> to protect British ships in the gulf.<\/h5>\n<h5>That\u2019s probably far short of the sort of military commitment Washington wants and the longer this drags on the harder it will be for the U.S. to drum up support for military action. Make no mistake, the hawks in the Trump administration are working toward war with Iran but whether they&#8217;ll achieve their goal is another matter. Ed.<\/h5>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">US seeks to build \u2018international consensus\u2019 blaming Iran for tanker attacks<\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Jessica Glenza \u2013 The Guardian June 15, 2019<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The US is hoping to \u201cbuild international consensus\u201d around what officials claim is Iran\u2019s responsibility for damaging two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, as UK officials joined the US in formally accusing <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\">Iran<\/a> of carrying out the attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The efforts come after the US released <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2019\/jun\/13\/mike-pompeo-iran-gulf-oil-tanker-attacks\">grainy surveillance footage<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>of an alleged Iran Revolutionary Guard patrol boat, with men who appear to remove a magnetic limpet mine on the hull of one of the ships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The acting defense secretary, Patrick Shanahan, said the US was looking to \u201cbuild international consensus to this international problem\u201d on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The attack was not only a \u201cUS situation\u201d, Shanahan said. He listed several other countries that operated vessels in the waters. \u201cWhen you look at the situation, a Norwegian ship, Japanese ship, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, UAE,\u201d Shanahan said, referring to attacks a few weeks prior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Oil prices have risen 3.4% following the attack, which came in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping channel for international oil supplies. Insurance for ship operators in the area jumped 10%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Saudi Arabia, one of the world\u2019s largest oil producers, also uses the Strait. On Saturday, the Saudi energy minister, Khalid al-Falih, said \u201cthere must be a rapid and decisive response to the threat\u201d to secure Gulf energy supplies and consumer confidence, according to a tweet from the ministry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The message was echoed by the Japanese industry minister, Hiroshige Seko, who said ministers agreed on the need to \u201cwork together to deal with the recent incidents from [an] energy security point of view\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The U.S. military released a video on Thursday, saying it showed Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards were behind the explosions that damaged the Norwegian-owned Front Altair and the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jun\/14\/us-accuses-iran-of-detaining-crew-after-oil-tanker-attack\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The UK officially joined the US<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in accusing Iran of perpetrating the attack on Friday night, in a statement from the Foreign Office saying: \u201cIt is almost certain that a branch of the Iranian military \u2013 the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps \u2013 attacked the two tankers on 13 June. No other state or non-state actor could plausibly have been responsible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The statement continued: \u201cThere is recent precedent for attacks by Iran against oil tankers. The Emirati-led investigation of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/may\/12\/uae-four-merchant-ships-reported-sabotaged\">12 May attack on four oil tankers near the port of Fujairah<\/a><\/strong><\/span> [in the UAE] concluded that it was conducted by a sophisticated state actor. We are confident that Iran bears responsibility for that attack.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Although Donald Trump claimed the attacks had \u201cIran written all over\u201d them, other heads of state have been more cautious in assigning blame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The United Nations secretary general, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, called for an independent investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cIt\u2019s very important to know the truth and it\u2019s very important that responsibilities are clarified. Obviously that can only be done if there is an independent entity that verifies those facts,\u201d Guterres told reporters on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The German foreign minister was also cautious, saying the video released by US Central Command was \u201cnot enough\u201d to make an assessment, according to<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> <a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/us-build-international-consensus-tanker-attacks-iran-interfered\/story?id=63722041\">ABC News<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Several world powers have meanwhile called for diplomatic efforts to lower tensions, including China and Russia, which have closer ties to Iran. The European Union called for \u201cmaximum restraint\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Iran, meanwhile, has denied responsibility for the attack. Iran\u2019s ambassador to the UK, Hamid Baeidinejad, said the claims were like \u201cfalse fabrications during world war I, the Vietnam war and Iraq war that were designed to instigate military interventions and armed conflicts in different parts of world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The attack came as the Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jun\/14\/shinzo-abe-iran-ayatollah-talks-analysis-trump\">visited Iran<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in an attempt to mediate new talks on a nuclear agreement. One of the ships attacked was a Japanese vessel called the Kokuka Courageous.
