Minutes after announcing a new policy clamping down on \u201chateful\u201d and \u201csupremacist\u201d videos, YouTube got to work banning, demonetizing, or otherwise hiding videos from conservatives, journalists, and even black metal musicians.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Google subsidiary updated its \u201chateful content\u201d<\/em> policies on Wednesday, announcing the clampdown in a blog post<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. The company said that from now on it will be \u201cspecifically prohibiting videos alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion.\u201d<\/em> Other videos that don\u2019t strictly violate the site\u2019s rules – including those promoting phony science or conspiracy theories – will be subject to demonetization, and other measures to restrict their viewership.<\/span><\/p>\n

Orwellian in theory? In practice, too. YouTube didn\u2019t wait long before wielding the ban-hammer with glee.<\/span><\/p>\n

First on the chopping block were videos that outright violated the \u201csupremacist\u201d rule. Norwegian black metal musician and convicted murderer Varg Vikernes had his channel \u2018Thulean Perspective\u2019 banned, likely for its pan-European white separatist content.<\/span><\/p>\n

YouTube appears to have taken its vow to pull \u201cvideos that promote or glorify Nazi ideology\u201d<\/em> seriously, removing everything from Vikernes\u2019 neo-pagan vlogs to low-fi punk music from its platform.<\/span><\/p>\n

Others targeted included vlogger \u2018Sinatra Says,\u2019 who rails against feminism and the social justice movement. For the crime of wrongthink, Sinatra had his channel demonetized. YouTube did not cite a single offensive video, but instead told the troublemaker that the move was necessary to \u201censure our community is safe for creators, viewers and advertisers.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
