The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which the United States rapidly dispatched to the Middle East amid tensions with Iran, has stayed outside of the strategic Persian Gulf waters, with its commander saying that the US Navy is seeking to avoid escalations. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Lincoln on Monday was some 320 kilometers (200 miles) off the eastern coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea. It would still need to pass through the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz before reaching the Persian Gulf.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want to inadvertently escalate something,\u201d Capt. Putnam Browne, the commanding officer of the Lincoln, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked about why the Lincoln had not entered the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, Rear Adm. John Wade, the commander of the carrier strike group, suggested that his forces could \u201cconduct my mission wherever and whenever needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He declined to discuss any specifics about that mission, though he claimed Iran had presented \u201ccredible threats\u201d to the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Capt. William Reed, the commander of the carrier\u2019s air wing, laughed off any notion that the situation was stressful. \u201cIt\u2019s just another day at the office,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Capt. Chris Follin, the commodore of the destroyer strike group traveling with the Lincoln, did not express any concern, either.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want to go against that,\u201d he said, nodding toward the ship\u2019s sailors and warplanes. \u201cOur mission is just to keep the peace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tensions have been running high between Tehran and Washington since late April, when Washington moved to cut Iran\u2019s oil exports to \u201czero\u201d and began to build up its military presence in the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n

The US said on May 5 that it was sending military reinforcements, including the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group, a squadron of B-52 bombers, and a battery of patriot missiles, to the Middle East, citing alleged unspecified \u201cthreats\u201d from Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n

That announcement prompted global concerns that the US may be planning to wage a war on Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tehran has downplayed Washington\u2019s belligerent rhetoric and moves, saying all American ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz have so far remained answerable to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as the force in charge of security in the strategic waterway.<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran has insisted that it will not initiate any conflict, but will firmly defend the country against any act of aggression.<\/span><\/p>\n
