The director-general of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said yesterday that the Israeli army had deliberately targeted journalists in the occupied Gaza Strip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Christophe Deloire was speaking to\u00a0the Jerusalem Post<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>, having received the Dan David Prize in Tel Aviv on behalf of the international press freedoms watchdog.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a war crime to target journalists because they are journalists,\u201d Deloire told the paper. \u201cWhen Israel shot those journalists [during the Great Return March protests], it was intentional.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe journalists could be clearly identified as journalists, with cameras and jackets and it could not be just by chance,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Referring to the United Nations\u2019 Commission of Inquiry into the Gaza protests, Deloire pointed out that the\u00a0report<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u201cconfirmed what we already considered a fact\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the Jerusalem Post<\/em>, last week RSF formally asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate suspected war crimes by the Israeli military against Palestinian journalists covering\u00a0protests in Gaza<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0since\u00a030 March 2018<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time, Deloire stated that \u201cthe Israeli authorities could not have been unaware of the presence of journalists among the civilian demonstrators, and therefore failed in the elementary duty of precaution and differentiation when targeting these protected persons with live rounds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese deliberate and repeated violations of international humanitarian law constitute war crimes,\u201d the statement continued.<\/span><\/p>\n

The RSF chief also had a warning for Israelis about deteriorating press freedoms at home.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am sure it does not happen in many countries that you have billboards with faces of journalists mentioning that they will not decide,\u201d Deloire told the paper, a reference to Likud election posters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deloire also criticised the prohibition on Israeli journalists entering the Gaza Strip, and added: \u201cThere is freedom in Israel\u2026 but editorial independence is not guaranteed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
