Jewish historian Geoffrey Alderman recalled<\/a><\/strong><\/span> an anecdote about Jeremy Corbyn on 8 May. Back in 1987, the Labour leader successfully campaigned<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to stop property developers taking over a Jewish cemetery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fighting a Hodge-led council to save a Jewish cemetery<\/h2>\n

And it turns out that Margaret Hodge<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, who has<\/strong><\/span><\/a> smeared<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>Corbyn as an antisemite<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, was leader<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of Islington Council at the time. Although Hodge\u2019s personal view is unspecified, under her leadership the council approved<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>\u201cdestroying the gravestones and digging-up and reburying the bodies\u201d to build for-profit properties.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alderman, who\u2019s authored<\/strong><\/span><\/a> many books on Jewish history, wrote<\/a><\/strong><\/span> that the 176-year-old cemetery was of \u201cgreat historic and architectural interest\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time, West London Synagogue had already agreed<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to sell off its graveyard to the property developers. But Alderman writes<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that, for orthodox Jewish people, the \u201cdeliberate destruction of a cemetery is sacrilegious\u201d. This sparked<\/strong><\/span><\/a> the successful campaign, which Alderman and Corbyn were both a part of, to overturn the council\u2019s decision.<\/span><\/p>\n
