The guys who get hurt and injured aren\u2019t hooligans, but protesters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">These are the words of David Dufresne, an independent journalist who\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/lesterfeder\/yellow-vests-police-brutality-social-media-france\">is angry<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0about the excessive use of force by French police since the start of the yellow vests (gilets jaunes) movement. Dufresne has kept a tally of the injured victims of police violence and he describes\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.franceinter.fr\/societe\/david-dufresne-une-partie-de-la-realite-les-violences-sur-les-manifestants-est-totalement-occultee\">his motivation<\/a><\/strong><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/globalvoices.org\/2019\/04\/08\/in-france-police-violence-escalates-to-quell-yellow-vests-protests\/#translation-tab-1\">Translation<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/globalvoices.org\/2019\/04\/08\/in-france-police-violence-escalates-to-quell-yellow-vests-protests\/#original-tab-1\">Original Quote<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">I got involved, right at the start of December, when I saw these horrendous images of the maimed circulating on social media. And I mean maimed: I\u2019ve counted 23 people who\u2019ve lost an eye, five who\u2019ve lost a hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">To call out the violence, David Dufresne set up a website, in partnership with Mediapart, an independent newspaper. Ironically named <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/alloplacebeauvau.mediapart.fr\/\">\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Hello Home Office, Justice Department<\/strong><\/span>\u201d<\/a>\u00a0(referencing a Twitter expression to flag illegal or offensive content to the police), his platform itemizes casualties since the beginning of the yellow vest movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The site details injuries reported by category.\u00a0Of the 550 reports cataloged, more than 222 concern head injuries, with at least 20 with cases of eye loss and five reported arm loss. Why are so many protesters losing an eye or a hand in these demonstrations?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">A controversial weapon<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">French law enforcement has been using a particular weapon referred to as \u2018<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.fr\/20190128\/riot-control-guns-whats-all-the-fuss-about-flash-balls-in-france\">less-lethal rubber bullet gun<\/a>\u2018 <em>(<\/em>lanceur <em>de<\/em> balle <em>de d\u00e9fense<\/em>, or LBD, in French). Made in Switzerland, originally designed to prevent killing or seriously wounding a target, this projectile launcher is controversial. Detractors say this weapon is entirely unsafe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Between 2004 and 2013, serious injuries of around 30 people were attributed to LBDs \u2014 the same number since the start of the yellow vests movement in November 2018 to present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In January, medical practitioners launched a petition to ban the use of LBDs. Laurent Thines, neurosurgeon and chief clinician at Besan\u00e7on teaching hospital said:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/globalvoices.org\/2019\/04\/08\/in-france-police-violence-escalates-to-quell-yellow-vests-protests\/#translation-tab-3\">Translation<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/globalvoices.org\/2019\/04\/08\/in-france-police-violence-escalates-to-quell-yellow-vests-protests\/#original-tab-3\">Original Quote<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A projectile of the LBD40 type, for example, launched at over 90 meters\/second (324 kilometers per hour) has an impact force of 200 joules [rate of energy aborption]: that\u2019s like having a 20 kilograms of concrete block thrown on to your face or head from one meter\u2019s height!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In principle, <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2019\/02\/01\/top-french-court-rules-controversial-rubber-bullets-launcher-legal\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>LBD should only be used<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in the area of the \u201ctorso, upper or lower limbs,\u201d according to Eric Morvan,\u00a0director general of the national police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Unfortunately, accuracy is haphazard, inflicting numerous injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Thines\u00a0said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Amputation of a limb, disfigurement for life, facial or dental trauma, ocular laceration or loss, skull fracture, brain haemorrhage, leading to doubtful survival prognosis, and leading to neurological damage \u2014 all these mutilations recalling the destroyed faces of First World War shelling victims\u2026\u00a0 So many lives have been sacrificed this way\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">French police have also used sting-ball grenades to enforce the order. Loaded with explosive trinitrotoluene (TNT), their detonation propels metallic fragments with a blast effect that can wound and deafen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">France is one of the last countries in Europe to employ LBD, along with Poland, Hungary, Turkey and Greece.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">A protest movement that won\u2019t go away<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Yellow vest protests kicked off in France as a reaction to fuel tax increases but rapidly transformed into weekly protests. Every Saturday, protesters take to the streets to campaign for new tax policies, greater purchasing power, a citizen\u2019s referendum, and the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Since November, the demonstrations have led to numerous instances of <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.fr\/20181217\/yellow-vests-how-much-will-the-protest-movement-cost-france\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>damage to property<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in several towns. Ten people have lost their lives \u201cindirectly\u201d in road accidents connected to the demonstrations. In Marseille, <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NewsCompact\/status\/1103291070325112832\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>a woman died<\/strong><\/span><\/a> after being hit by an exploding grenade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Although the Ministry of the Interior acknowledges 2,200 injured, including ten with \u201cirreparable eye damage,\u201d the government presses on with its strategy of maintaining order. Questioned by journalists during a visit in January 2019 to Aude, in southwest France, over the police violence, Minister of the Interior Christophe Castaner asserted that \u201cno officer or constable\u201d had \u201cattacked any Gilets Jaunes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In February, Castaner returned to the argument, justifying the use of force, saying that hooligans have regularly infiltrated the demonstrators\u2019 ranks. The law enforcers\u2019 aggressive response, according to the minister, were reactions to this violence:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p according to Castaner, the Minister of the Interior.<\/span> <span aria-hidden=\"true\">These investigations will establish whether officers have applied \u201cproportionate\u201d force.\u00a0 \u201cAbuses will be punished,\u201d<\/span> <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bfmtv.com\/politique\/gilet-jaune-blesse-s-il-y-a-une-faute-elle-sera-sanctionnee-1622310.html\" Michelle Bachelet of the High Commissioner of Human Rights, has also called for an \u201c<\/span><a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telesurenglish.net\/news\/Yellow-Vests-Plan-Sit-ins-UN-Calls-For-Police-Repression-Probe-Despite-Macron-Denial-20190309-0004.html\" 19,\u201d which stands for 19th consecutive weekend of protest by the Yellow Vests,\u00a0 a 73-year-old demonstrator sustained a head injury in a fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:
