Some of the more\u00a0advanced\u00a0Israel\/Palestine commentators have agreed amongst themselves that the\u00a0\u2018one-state solution\u2019\u00a0amounts\u00a0to empty talk for the simple reason\u00a0that Palestine\u00a0is \u2018one-state\u2019\u00a0already: It has\u00a0natural borders, one electric grid and even\u00a0one international pre-dial number (+972).\u00a0But this beautiful and historic land, stretched from the river to the sea, is dominated by a foreign and hostile ideology that is racially supremacist and vile towards the indigenous people of the land.<\/h5>\n
Some of those perceptive analysts have been bewildered following a peculiar shift in Israeli politics: while the so-called\u00a0Israeli \u2018Left\u2019\u00a0has been advocating\u00a0racial and ethnic segregation between Jews and Palestinians by adopting the\u00a0two-state solution, it is actually the Zionist ultra-right that has been pushing constantly for an integration of the \u2018land\u2019 by means of Israeli annexation.<\/h5>\n
While very few\u00a0within the Israeli Left\u00a0joined the call for\u00a0a one-state solution,\u00a0it seems as if PM Benjamin Netanyahu and the entire Israeli\u00a0Right\u00a0are thrilled by the idea.<\/h5>\n
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Saturday\u00a0to extend Israeli sovereignty to the settlements of the West Bank<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>if he is re-elected in\u00a0Tuesday\u2019s poll.<\/h5>\n
Netanyahu\u2019s declaration shouldn\u2019t take us\u00a0by surprise. Two weeks ago,\u00a0a\u00a0Haaretz poll<\/span><\/a>\u00a0revealed that 42% of Israelis back West Bank\u00a0annexation.\u00a0Apparently, 16% of those polled\u00a0support annexing the entire West Bank without giving any political rights to the Palestinians who live there. I guess that it is hard not to see the political reasoning behind PM\u00a0Netanyahu\u2019s\u00a0promise to\u00a0annex settlements. Netanyahu,\u00a0who is likely to form the next Israeli government, is attempting to appeal to the Israeli ultra-right voters. He wants them to vote Likud on Tuesday rather than \u2018wasting\u2019\u00a0their\u00a0vote on a small\u00a0ultra-right party or another.<\/h5>\n
There is obviously a big difference between the one-state call that has been pushed by\u00a0Palestinian solidarity\u00a0activists and Netanyahu\u2019s politics of annexation.\u00a0 While Palestinian\u00a0rights\u00a0advocates are referring to\u00a0one democratic state, Netanyahu is not committed to democracy at all. He is solely faithful to the Jewish population and what he offers in practice is a \u2018One Jewish State Solution.\u2019\u00a0After all, Israel\u00a0defines itself as \u2018the Jewish State\u2019\u00a0and it\u00a0is there to serve one people while denying\u00a0others their\u00a0most elementary rights. Israel, as we know,\u00a0is not a state of its citizens, it is a state of its Jewish citizens. By the time Israel comes to term with its sin and\u00a0transcends into\u00a0a state of its citizens regardless of their race, ethnicity or religious belief it will be renamed. It may as well be called Palestine.<\/h5>\n
