If the U.S. does indeed label Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) a \u201cterror group\u201d it will mark a new level of American hypocrisy. For not only was the IRGC fighting Sunni militants in Syria, long before America entered the fray, but it did so while U.S. allies were backing the Sunni militants.<\/h5>\n
It is an acknowledged fact that the Saudis financed ISIS<\/a><\/span>, (otherwise known as Islamic State, ISIL or Daesh), the main terror group in Syria. This was happening while the IRGC was fighting the Sunni militants in an effort to save one of Iran\u2019s few allies in the region. Yet rather than label the Saudis as \u201cterror supporters\u201d the U.S. has apparently decided to designate as a \u201cterror group\u201d one of the very units fighting the Sunni militants.<\/h5>\n
In plain language it\u2019s called hypocrisy and it\u2019s something that the Americans are beginning to excel at.<\/h5>\n
Such hypocrisy and double standards helps explain why America is so hated and reviled in large parts of the Muslim world today. This will only get worse if the Trump administration designates the IRGC as a \u201cterror group\u201d. Ed.<\/h5>\n

The US is reportedly preparing to designate Iran<\/a>\u2018s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC<\/a>) as a foreign terrorist organisation.<\/span><\/p>\n

It would be the first time Washington has formally labelled another country\u2019s military a terrorist group.<\/span><\/p>\n

The decision is expected to be announced by the US State Department perhaps as early as next week, The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>reported.\u00a0It has been rumoured for years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran warned it might put the US military on its terror list in retaliation, a senior Iranian politician said on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Revolutionary Guards are placed on America\u2019s list of terrorist groups, we will put that country\u2019s military on the terror blacklist next to Daesh [Isis],\u201d Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, head of the Iranian parliament\u2019s national security committee, tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo<\/a><\/strong><\/span> has advocated for the change in US\u00a0policy as part of the Trump administration\u2019s tough posture towards Tehran.<\/span><\/p>\n

The announcement would come ahead of the first anniversary of president Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s decision to pull out of a 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran and to reimpose sanctions that had crippled Iran\u2019s economy.<\/span><\/p>\n

The US has already blacklisted dozens of entities and people for affiliations with the IRGC, but the organisation as a whole is not.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2007, the US\u00a0Treasury designated the IRGC\u2019s Quds Force, its unit in charge of operations abroad, \u201cfor its support of terrorism”. It\u00a0has described it as Iran\u2019s \u201cprimary arm for executing its policy of supporting terrorist and insurgent groups\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran previously warned of a \u201ccrushing\u201d response should the US go ahead with the designation.<\/span><\/p>\n

IRGC commander Mohammad Ali Jafari warned in 2017 that if Mr Trump went ahead with the move \u201cthen the Revolutionary Guards will consider the American army to be like Islamic State all around the world\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such threats are particularly ominous for US\u00a0forces in places such as Iraq, where Iran-aligned Shia militia are located in close proximity to US\u00a0troops.<\/span><\/p>\n

Set up after the 1979 Islamic Revolution to protect the Shia\u00a0clerical ruling system, the IRGC is Iran\u2019s most powerful security organisation. It has control over large sectors of the Iranian economy and has a huge influence in its political system.<\/span><\/p>\n

The IRGC is in charge of Iran\u2019s ballistic missiles and nuclear programmes. Tehran has warned it has missiles with a range of up to 2,000km (1,242 miles), putting Israel and US\u00a0military bases in the region within reach.<\/span><\/p>\n

The IRGC has an estimated 125,000-strong military with army, navy and air units and answers directly to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
