Despite this rhetoric, endless \u2014 and, frankly, pointless \u2014wars are, sadly, still the American norm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Two more Americans <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/6e7fe52542ef89ce841cea71a848a144e7b0c9a0?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.armytimes.com%2Fnews%2Fyour-army%2F2019%2F03%2F23%2Fpentagon-identifies-two-fort-carson-soldiers-killed-in-afghanistan%2F&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=6a%20\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/6e7fe52542ef89ce841cea71a848a144e7b0c9a0?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.armytimes.com%2Fnews%2Fyour-army%2F2019%2F03%2F23%2Fpentagon-identifies-two-fort-carson-soldiers-killed-in-afghanistan%2F&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=6aaa76ec15e62056\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>were just killed<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Afghanistan \u2014 a war that the Trump administration realises needs to end, but seems in no hurry to actually do so. In December 2018, Trump announced that all US troops would be withdrawn from Syria, only to later rescind that declaration in <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/015a808da75c3c32462c8f3e2d793b4fbb057acc?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nbcnews.com%2Fnews%2Fus-news%2Ftrump-says-he-agrees-100-percent-keeping-u-s-troops-n979466&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=a2ffed4d750487cf\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/015a808da75c3c32462c8f3e2d793b4fbb057acc?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nbcnews.com%2Fnews%2Fus-news%2Ftrump-says-he-agrees-100-percent-keeping-u-s-troops-n979466&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=a2ffed4d750487cf\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>favour<\/strong><\/span><\/a> of a small force of 400 to 1,000 troops to stay behind indefinitely, complementing the more than 5,000 troops in Iraq, who are there to satiate the administration\u2019s obsession with Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Soldiers who were children when the Afghanistan war began are dying. It\u2019s well past time to bring all of our troops from Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">My uncle fought in Vietnam. After his deployment, he called my grandmother and said she needed to do everything possible to ensure that my father, who was several years younger, did not eventually find himself sent to South Asia. An easy way to avoid the draft would have been enrolling in college, but in Appalachian Ohio in the 1970s, college wasn\u2019t exactly an option for everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Fortunately, the Vietnam War ended before my father was eligible for the draft, so it was a bridge they never had to cross. I\u2019m not sure what my uncle\u2019s thoughts were when he made that phone call \u2014 he died in the mid-90s, so I never got to ask. But it\u2019s reasonable to assume he thought there was something wrong about what the US was doing overseas, and wanted to spare his brother the risk of dying in a pointless war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">We assume that American soldiers die in defence of our rights and freedoms, as they protect us from existential threats. We thank veterans for their service and revere the dead as martyrs. By and large, we never dig deep into why they actually fight and die. After all, no grieving mother wants to think her child gave their life for nothing. But in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, that\u2019s exactly what\u2019s happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Consider Syria. The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/f29aa600135d41f76cec31ccfda865dc5f8c784e?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vox.com%2F2019%2F2%2F22%2F18236122%2Fsyria-troops-trump-400-sanders&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=68cb624a5bb92f70\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/f29aa600135d41f76cec31ccfda865dc5f8c784e?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vox.com%2F2019%2F2%2F22%2F18236122%2Fsyria-troops-trump-400-sanders&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=68cb624a5bb92f70\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">small contingent<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of US troops will be be posted there with the primary goal of containing Iranian influence, but also to continue to combat Isis after the fall of the so-called caliphate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Can you imagine sorting out the mess of spillover effects from the Syrian civil war and balancing against the adversarial regional power with only 400 troops? Hubris that unique can only be found in US foreign policy. \u201cPlaying politics with people\u2019s lives\u201d is an overused and oft-abused phrase, but in this case, it\u2019s quite literally true. Four Americans were killed in Syria in January. Of those troops who remain: how many of their lives are worth a set of unobtainable objectives?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Just across the border in Iraq, there are still more than 5,000 troops present for the same reasons that troops are remaining in Syria: to help the Iraqis fight Isis, but <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/d0733516eac42f5d6911665ba1df943a9a01bfae?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2019%2F02%2F03%2Ftrump-wants-to-keep-troops-in-iraq-because-iran-is-a-real-problem%2F&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=59190fd249ae2e36\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/d0733516eac42f5d6911665ba1df943a9a01bfae?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2019%2F02%2F03%2Ftrump-wants-to-keep-troops-in-iraq-because-iran-is-a-real-problem%2F&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=59190fd249ae2e36\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>mainly<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to keep an eye on Iran. It\u2019s not a wise policy move, since Isis has largely <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/5d916c53c18f0f95dc3817ba56cc44d6d0ea28d0?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.startribune.com%2Fus-general-visits-troops-fighting-islamic-state-in-syria%2F498231831%2F&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=87ed23d5eb77a304\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/5d916c53c18f0f95dc3817ba56cc44d6d0ea28d0?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.startribune.com%2Fus-general-visits-troops-fighting-islamic-state-in-syria%2F498231831%2F&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=87ed23d5eb77a304\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">been defeated<\/a><\/strong><\/span> (although terrorism is a fact of life and can never be fully eradicated) and yet thousands of troops are stuck in one of the most dangerous places on the planet because the president wants \u201cto be able to watch Iran.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Trump administration always fails to mention that Iran is too weak to <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/097e2e7b83945792770d674be59178b8eecf50cb?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonexaminer.com%2Fopinion%2Famericas-latest-unnecessary-obsession-iran-in-syria&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=9551039167c01522\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/097e2e7b83945792770d674be59178b8eecf50cb?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonexaminer.com%2Fopinion%2Famericas-latest-unnecessary-obsession-iran-in-syria&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=9551039167c01522\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">project<\/a> meaningful power at the expense of its neighbours, and the International Atomic Energy Agency says they are still in <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/85c088b4c7991460d7af9c20773aa11fec29f569?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yahoo.com%2Fnews%2Fiaea-says-says-iran-adhering-terms-nuclear-deal-171228120.html&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=4391e9ec64691c79\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/85c088b4c7991460d7af9c20773aa11fec29f569?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yahoo.com%2Fnews%2Fiaea-says-says-iran-adhering-terms-nuclear-deal-171228120.html&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=4391e9ec64691c79\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">compliance<\/a> with the 2015 deal struck by the Obama administration that limits their nuclear capabilities, even despite the US\u2019s exit from that agreement. It\u2019s not clear just what the president thinks he\u2019s keeping watch over. Meanwhile, 17 Americans <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/6209b7735c006a51dc764c9bfef7cd98bfeae210?url=http%3A%2F%2Ficasualties.org%2F&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=1c7dac54f1873dd1\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/6209b7735c006a51dc764c9bfef7cd98bfeae210?url=http%3A%2F%2Ficasualties.org%2F&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=1c7dac54f1873dd1\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>were<\/strong><\/span><\/a> killed in Iraq in 2018, according to <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/icasualties.org\/\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-http:\/\/icasualties.org\/\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">iCasualties.org<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In Afghanistan, the US has accomplished very little, despite a lot of sacrifice. The Taliban has steadily regained control of significant swathes of the country, while the Afghan government is weak, seemingly corrupt, and completely dependent on US support. Civilian deaths were at record highs in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">War hawks argue that America needs to stay in Afghanistan to prevent a repeat of September 11. But those attacks were aided by multiple US intelligence failures and orchestrated across the globe, including at flight schools right here in the US. As international security expert Patrick Porter has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/61c89785a2ec746ef0e2e3d79c73780b912ce0e9?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FPatPorter76%2Fstatus%2F1099247120614391808&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=c1c51c90193e04b1\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-8844151-https:\/\/mailtrack.io\/trace\/link\/61c89785a2ec746ef0e2e3d79c73780b912ce0e9?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FPatPorter76%2Fstatus%2F1099247120614391808&amp;userId=3043600&amp;signature=c1c51c90193e04b1\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">said<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, there \u201cis no straight line from Helmand to Manhattan.\u201d Counterterrorism doesn\u2019t require occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationclearinghouse.info\/51354.htm\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No mother wants to think that her child died in vain.
