<\/a><\/p>\nImagine if a movie opened in 1,000 theaters and the internet\u2019s biggest movie site had \u2026 three reviews from \u201ctop critics.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n No need to imagine. That\u2019s the case with \u201cUnplanned,\u201d a new movie released Friday that takes a critical look at Planned Parenthood.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAs one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, Abby Johnson was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women on their reproductive choices,\u201d Rotten Tomatoes says in a brief description of the film. \u201cHer passion surrounding a woman\u2019s right to choose led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in. Until the day she saw something that changed everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Of course, all three \u201ctop critics\u201d say the movie is \u201crotten.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n But there\u2019s more going on behind the scenes. Commercials for the movie \u201chave been rejected by Lifetime, Hallmark Channel, HGTV and several other cable networks other than Fox News,\u201d the\u00a0Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0wrote Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n Lifetime, for example, told the film\u2019s marketers that they declined to air the commercial due to the \u201csensitive nature of the film,\u201d the ad buyers tell\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter.\u00a0The marketers though, note that the network \u2014 which is owned by A&E Networks, a joint venture of Walt Disney and Hearst Communications \u2014 previously promoted\u00a0an interview<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>with Scarlett Johansson where she pitches Planned Parenthood.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n The Travel Channel, Cooking Channel, HGTV and Food Network, each of which are owned by Discovery, also refused to sell ad time for\u00a0Unplanned\u00a0due to the \u201csensitive nature\u201d of the movie, say those who tried buying air time.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Other networks that refused to advertise the movie include the Hallmark Channel and USA Network, the latter of which is owned by NBCUniversal.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe were looking to spend money, but they didn\u2019t want to get involved,\u201d said John Sullivan, a producer of\u00a0Unplanned.\u00a0THR\u00a0reached out to all of the networks; Lifetime declined to comment while the rest did not respond.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMost of the networks didn\u2019t go into detail beyond citing the subject matter of the film and that they didn\u2019t want to get into politics. But we don\u2019t believe we\u2019re in the political category,\u201d said Joe Knopp, an\u00a0Unplanned\u00a0producer.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cUnplanned\u201d was already hit with an R rating, which means many people will choose not to see it, fearing gore. And some networks have used that rating as a excuse not to run ads. \u201cUp TV cited the R rating when it also rejected the commercial, as did several Christian radio channels that also refused to air ads for\u00a0Unplanned,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>the Reporter said.<\/span><\/p>\n The rating also put family-friendly Pure Flix in the uncomfortable position of having to distribute and market an R-rated movie for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n But there is one big-money backer who has got plenty of cash to push the movie. Mike Lindell, founder of MyPillow, dropped $1 million in the movie, and he\u2019s got a big platform on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThis is a true story,\u201d Lindell said on XM\u2019s \u201cBreitbart News Daily.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s going to help so many people change their hearts. It\u2019s going to save so many lives. I talked to my dad. We prayed about it, and I said, \u2018Let\u2019s do this.\u2019 I called them back and said, \u2018I\u2019ll do a cameo. I\u2019ll do a part in it, but I want it to be a really good movie. A quality movie, because it\u2019s got one of the best messages ever.\u2019 I asked, \u2018Are you short any money?\u2019 and they said they were short a million dollars, and I said, \u2018Well, you\u2019re covered.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI just felt led to do that,\u201d continued Lindell. \u201cTo see God\u2019s timing, nine months later, everything that\u2019s happening right now, it\u2019s just amazing. And you know it\u2019s going to make an impact when stations aren\u2019t advertising it. They\u2019re afraid of it. A theater in my home state \u2014 just last week \u2014 wasn\u2019t going to show it, and hundreds of people called there, and now they\u2019re on-board. It\u2019s like they\u2019re living in fear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n He also criticized the movie\u2019s rating. \u201cYou give this an R-rating? Are you kidding me? A 15-year-old can go get an abortion without her parents\u2019 permission, but you can\u2019t go to this movie without your parents? I just think this is a turning point in our history, where some day we\u2019re going to look back and ask, \u2018What were we thinking?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Still, Planned Parenthood is hammering the movie. \u201cThe claims in this film are simply false,\u201d the abortion group said in a statement. \u201cPlanned Parenthood is proud to provide expert, high-quality health care to our patients, including safe and legal abortion, in a safe and compassionate environment. The movie promotes many falsehoods including most importantly, distortions and incorrect depictions about healthcare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Christian Toto, one of the best movie critics out there, praised the movie in a fair and\u00a0balanced review<\/span><\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe tale is targeted to undecided souls, and on that level the film\u2019s power is considerable,\u201d he wrote. \u201c\u201cUnplanned\u201d offers a full-throated defense of a side that often gets ignored by today\u2019s storytellers. The drama deserves respect from both sides of the abortion debate, if only because this part of the fight is so rarely articulated on screen.<\/span><\/p>\n
