The Southern Poverty Law Center was long ago exposed as money-making scam.<\/span><\/p>\n

It has amassed<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>almost half-a-billion dollars fighting an imaginary tide of \u201chate\u201d that is ever \u201crising,\u201d which provides the twin benefits of bringing in that money and advancing the totalitarian goals of the radical Left. Topping that agenda is demonizing any opposition to the Left as \u201chate,\u201d be it racism, homophobia, transphobia, and Islamophobia.<\/span><\/p>\n

But last week, the\u00a0discredited group fired<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0its co-founder, Morris Dees, a shocker in the \u201ccivil rights community\u201d that opened the door to discussing exactly who Dees is and what goes on at SPLC, also called the Poverty Palace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Former SPLC staff member\u00a0Bob Moser took to the\u00a0New Yorker<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0yesterday to elaborate on what we\u2019ve known for some time: The SPLC is, again, a money-making scam. But he revealed that truth from the inside.<\/span><\/p>\n

Until Justice Rolls Down Like Dollars<\/h2>\n

A detailed report in the\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/strong><\/span><\/em>\u00a0explained<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0that SPLC fired Dees likely because of the long-term abuse of women and blacks at the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stephen Bright, a Yale law professor and former director of the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta, told the\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0that SPLC\u2019s fundraising is \u201cfraudulent,\u201d and called Dees a \u201cflimflam man and he\u2019s managed to flimflam his way along for many years raising money by telling people about the Ku Klux Klan and hate groups,\u201d he said. \u201cHe sort of goes to whatever will sell and has, of course, brought in millions and millions and millions of dollars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The flim-flam man\u2019s career is officially over, and\u00a0Moser offers a few insights<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0that open with an amusing but telling vignette:<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been thinking about the jokes my S.P.L.C. colleagues and I used to tell to keep ourselves sane. Walking to lunch past the center\u2019s Maya Lin-designed memorial to civil-rights martyrs, we\u2019d cast a glance at the inscription from Martin Luther King, Jr., etched into the black marble \u2014 \u201cUntil justice rolls down like waters\u201d\u2014 and intone, in our deepest voices, \u201cUntil justice rolls down like dollars.\u201d The Law Center had a way of turning idealists into cynics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Working in a building that \u201cmade social justice \u2018look despotic,\u2019\u201d the earnest young leftist quickly learned that fighting hate involved a lot of hypocrisy and a lot more money.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the hypocrisy, Moser wrote, blacks at SPLC were almost uniformly \u201cadministrative and support staff \u2014 \u2018the help,\u2019 one of my black colleagues said pointedly.\u201d But the \u201c\u2018professional staff\u2019 \u2014 the lawyers, researchers, educators, public-relations officers, and fund-raisers \u2014 were almost exclusively white. Just two staffers, including me, were openly gay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the money-making,\u00a0Moser quotes<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0another of Dees\u2019s critics, who says Dees viewed \u201ccivil-rights work mainly as a marketing tool for bilking gullible Northern liberals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

So beyond Dees\u2019s having a \u201creputation for hitting on young women,\u201d SPLC is just a storefront for selling the \u201cfight against hate\u201d to make a pile of money. \u201cThe work could be meaningful and gratifying,\u201d Moser wrote. \u201cBut it was hard, for many of us, not to feel like we\u2019d become pawns in what was, in many respects, a highly profitable scam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

SPLC, a former staff member said to Moser, was a \u201cvirtual buffet of injustices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Moser eventually admits<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0that he and other staffers didn\u2019t care enough about their own integrity to blow the whistle:<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of work, we spent a lot of time drinking and dishing in Montgomery bars and restaurants about the oppressive security regime, the hyperbolic fund-raising appeals, and the fact that, though the center claimed to be effective in fighting extremism, \u201chate\u201d always continued to be on the rise, more dangerous than ever, with each year\u2019s report on hate groups. \u201cThe S.P.L.C.\u2014 making hate pay,\u201d we\u2019d say.<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t funny then. At this moment, it seems even grimmer.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Moser and this coworkers participated in the \u201cmaking hate pay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

No Objections at All to What SPLC Did<\/h2>\n

Not once in this half-apology for joining this massive fraud did Moser express sorrow for helping smear innocent conservatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from defaming mainstream conservatives, SPLC\u2019s application of the \u201chate group\u201d label inspired an\u00a0attempted mass murder<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>at the Family Research Council.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Moser\u2019s concern was this<\/a><\/strong><\/span>: \u201cAs critics have long pointed out, however, the hate-group designations also drive attention to the extremists. Many groups, including the religious-right Family Research Council and the Alliance Defending Freedom, raise considerable money by decrying the S.P.L.C.\u2019s \u2018attacks.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Moser never admits that the SPLC\u2019s \u201cextremist\u201d and \u201chate\u201d designations are either bogus or highly suspect, or that the\u00a0designated targets don\u2019t really exist<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. Nor does he mention that SPLC faces multiple\u00a0lawsuits alleging<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0defamation,\u00a0mail fraud and violations<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0of the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizaitions Act.<\/span><\/p>\n
