{"id":184111,"date":"2019-02-23T07:17:48","date_gmt":"2019-02-23T07:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=184111"},"modified":"2019-02-26T08:27:11","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T08:27:11","slug":"homogenised-temperature-data-from-australian-weather-bureau-in-spotlight-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=184111","title":{"rendered":"Homogenised Temperature Data From Australian Weather Bureau in Spotlight Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Richard Szabo \u2013 The Australian Feb 22, 2019<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A report in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/national-affairs\/climate\/heat-on-bureau-of-meteorology-over-data-records-rewrite\/news-story\/30c0bc68e582feb2828915e172702bd1?utm_source=The%20Australian&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=editorial&amp;utm_content=TodayS%20\">The Australian<\/a><\/strong><\/span> has warned that the integrity of Australia\u2019s historical temperature record is being challenged after the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) updated its temperature records for the second time in six years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The report cited environmental scientist Jennifer Marohasy who questioned how BoM could have released an updated\u00a0<strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/change\/acorn-sat\/documents\/BRR-032.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dataset called ACORN-SAT version 2 in October 2018<\/span><\/a><\/strong> that \u201cgenerated a 23 percent increase in the rate of warming, just through updating the official ACORN-SAT record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Marohasy shared a table comparing raw temperature readings and the two \u201chomogenised\u201d ACORN-SAT datasets, explaining that the data corrections have resulted in a \u201crewriting\u201d of the temperature records of 112 weather stations dating back to 1910.\u00a0ACORN-SAT stands for the Australian Climate Observations Reference Network\u2014Surface Air Temperatures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cTemperatures are changed through a process known as homogenisation, and then changed again, sometimes by as much as 6.4 degrees Celsius (11.5 F) for the one day,\u201d Marohasy said in a <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/jennifermarohasy.com\/2019\/02\/met-bureau-rewrites-history-again-at-albany\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">blog post<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Met. In the year 2012, BoM homogenised the maximum temperature to 51.2\u00a0degrees Celsius (124 F), before it was recently revised to\u00a049.5\u00a0degrees Celsius (121.1 F).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">While various accounts have revealed that it is not unusual for weather bureaus to change temperature records\u2014New Zealand\u2019s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) was involved in\u00a0a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/Niwa-sued-over-data-accuracy\"><strong>court battle<\/strong><\/a> <strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110727004206\/http:\/\/www.suite101.com:80\/content\/legal-defeat-for-global-warming-in-kiwigate-scandal-a294157\">with<\/a> <a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.climateconversation.wordshine.co.nz\/docs\/awfw\/are-we-feeling-warmer-yet.htm\">climate skeptics<\/a><\/strong><\/span> who <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/quadrant.org.au\/opinion\/doomed-planet\/2010\/06\/nz-climate-crisis-gets-worse\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">claimed<\/span><\/strong><\/a> that scientists had taken raw temperature records and<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> <a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2010\/08\/16\/new-zealands-niwa-sued-over-climate-data-adjustments\/\">adjusted them<\/a><\/strong><\/span> resulting in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/asiancorrespondent.com\/2011\/05\/kiwigate-battle-for-temperature-records-heats-up\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">warming trend<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u2014Marohasy questioned the rationale behind the scale of the homogenisation applied to the Albany records on Feb.\u00a08, 1933.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cUsually past temperatures are cooled relative to the present as part of remodelling,\u201d Marohasy explained.\u00a0But she found it \u201cunusual\u201d that the Feb.\u00a08, 1933 Albany temperature record had been increased so much by\u00a0BoM\u2019s homogenisation, given that \u201ccooling the past relative to the present has the effect of exaggerating global warming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cGiven the magnitude and direction of this change to the Albany temperatures, which was first made six years ago, several of us asked the bureau: \u2018Why?&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cWhy was the temperature at Albany on this day (February 8, 1933) adjusted-up by so much (6.4 degrees) in the official version 1 of the ACORN-SAT data set that was published six years ago?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Marohasy said she never got a response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">When The Australian contacted BoM, a spokesman strongly defended the second version of ACORN-SAT, describing it as an \u201cimproved official homogeneous temperature data set\u201d with \u201crigorous and reliable\u201d methodology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The new data set has benefited from \u201cnumerous scientific and technological advances which have occurred over the past six years, as well as the \u00adinsights and recommendations from an independent ACORN-SAT technical advisory forum,\u201d the spokesperson told\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/national-affairs\/climate\/heat-on-bureau-of-meteorology-over-data-records-rewrite\/news-story\/30c0bc68e582feb2828915e172702bd1\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">News Limited<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt also contains new data which was not previously available when the bureau developed the first data set.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However, Marohasy is not satisfied with BoM\u2019s explanation that homogenisation is world\u2019s best practice, and that ACORN-SAT is scientific. She questions the scientific merit of making unconventional adjustments to historical temperatures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cIt is not scientific to make such changes to temperature measurements, though this type of change,\u201d she said. \u201cThe integrity of the historical temperature record is of extraordinary importance. This record also underpins belief in catastrophic human-caused global warming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Given the apparent lack of transparency surrounding BoM\u2019s homogenisation methods, Marohasy says she holds grave concerns when she sees leading climate scientists like Sophie Lewis and David Karoly refer to the revised ACORN-SAT data as \u201cobservations\u201d in their peer-reviewed scientific publications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cThey erroneously refer to ACORN-SAT Version 1 values as \u2018observations,\u2019\u201d Marohasy wrote. \u201cMost climate scientists seem to want to believe that the temperature values that they are working with represent real measurements but they don\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Australian reported that the overall changes in ACORN-SAT 2 have increased Australia\u2019s temperature movements for the past 100 years by 23 percent to 1.23\u00a0degrees Celsius (34.2 F), which would is very close to the 1.5\u00a0degree Celsius warming that the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been warning of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Marohasy questioned how BoM\u2019s homogenisation could have resulted in a 23 percent increase in the rate of warming compared with the previous official ACORN-SAT temperature record.\u00a0The temperature increase in the maximum temperature dataset is now 0.116 degrees Celsius compared to 0.09 degrees Celsius in ACORD-SAT version 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cThe incorporation of data from new sites may account for some of the 23 per cent increase,\u201d Marohasy told The Australian, \u201cbecause the bureau have opened new sites in hotter western NSW, while closing higher-altitude weather stations, including Charlotte Pass in the Snowy Mountains.\u201d She added that the effect of changing from manual to automatic weather stations had also not been assessed properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott previously advocated for BoM\u2019s behaviour to be forensically investigated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However, BoM only faced a technical panel review of its network equipment and temperature data handling that eventually found no major issues with the homogenisation methods it uses.
