Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>France said on Tuesday, days after a treaty between the US and Russia that formed the cornerstone of European nuclear security collapsed, that it had fired a nuclear-capable missile from a fighter jet.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>France has been flexing its military muscles and asserting its independence since feuding with US President Donald Trump over defense issues.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>France fired the missile from a fighter jet in an exercise that tested every element of an actual nuclear strike, Reuters described the country&#8217;s military as saying.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-piano-inline-content-wrapper=\"\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">France, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/9-nuclear-nations-arsenals-ranked-us-vs-russia-china-wins-2019-1\">one of Europe&#8217;s two nuclear powers<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, said on Tuesday that it had fired a nuclear-capable missile from a fighter jet, while the US and Russia feud over the death of a nuclear treaty that saw Europe purged of most of its weapons of mass destruction during the hair-triggered days of the Cold War.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">France tested all phases of a nuclear strike with an 11-hour mission that saw a Rafale fighter jet refuel and fire an unarmed missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-france-nuclear\/france-carries-out-rare-simulation-of-nuclear-deterrent-strike-idUSKCN1PU1MK\">Reuters described France&#8217;s military as saying<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;These real strikes are scheduled in the life of the weapons&#8217; system,&#8221; said a spokesman for the French air force, Col. Cyrille Duvivier, according to Reuters. &#8220;They are carried out at fairly regular intervals, but remain rare because the real missile, without its warhead, is fired.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">France also operates a fleet of ballistic-missile submarines that can fire some of its 280 some nuclear warheads, but the subs move in secrecy and don&#8217;t provide the same messaging effect as more visible fighter jets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">France&#8217;s announcement of a nuclear test run came after the US and Russia fell out of the <a href=\"http:\/\/templatelab.com\/intermediate-range-nuclear-forces-treaty\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\">Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, which barred both countries from building nuclear missiles with ranges between 300 and 3,400 miles.
