When Trump first announced his plan to withdraw from Syria we said that we wouldn\u2019t be surprised if U.S. troops were still there in six months and increasingly it looks as if they will be. In large part this will be due to Israeli pressure.<\/h5>\n
Israel wants U.S. troops in Syria to oppose a build-up of Iranian forces in the country. Even though Iranian forces are in Syria at the invitation of President Assad, while U.S. forces are not. In fact Syria has demanded that U.S. forces leave<\/a><\/span>.<\/h5>\n
That was last year and they are still in Syria and now Trump is going back on all his campaign promises. While running for president he vowed to drastically reduce<\/a><\/span> America\u2019s military footprint overseas.<\/h5>\n
That obviously hasn\u2019t happened and now he\u2019s also going back on his pledge to see an \u201cimmediate and full withdrawal<\/a><\/span>\u201d of U.S. troops from Syria.<\/h5>\n
And note how Trump takes credit for clearing ISIS from Syria. When in fact it was largely due to Russian and Iranian efforts. America had been ostensibly waging war on ISIS since mid-2014 with little success.<\/h5>\n
The tide of war only really turned when Russian forces entered Syria in Sept 2015. Prior to that the U.S. had been waging a phoney war, bombing empty desert<\/a><\/span> rather than its proxies in ISIS.<\/h5>\n

Trump: \u2018We have to protect Israel,\u2019 Shifting again on Syria withdrawal<\/h1>\n

US President Donald Trump indicated this weekend that some US troops in Syria would remain there \u201cto protect Israel,\u201d in an apparent shift from his earlier insistence on an absolute withdrawal<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with Margaret Brennan of CBS News, Trump was pressed to identify precisely how much of America\u2019s force presence there would be coming home \u2013 and how quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to be there and we\u2019re going to be staying. We have to protect Israel,\u201d he replied. \u201cWe have to protect other things that we have. But we\u2019re \u2013 yeah, they\u2019ll be coming back in a matter of time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLook, we\u2019re protecting the world,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019re spending more money than anybody\u2019s ever spent in history, by a lot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli officials expressed alarm<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in December at Trump\u2019s surprise decision to pull all 2,000 US troops from the Syrian battlefield<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, where it sees Iranian presence growing ever closer to its northern border.<\/span><\/p>\n

They have been pushing the Trump administration to maintain a presence at al-Tanf in eastern Syria, which has served as an important base both in countering Islamic State fighters as well as Iranian influence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump also revealed that he planned on keeping troops in Iraq for similar reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be able to watch Iran,\u201d he said. \u201cIran is a real problem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He claimed to Brennan that \u201c99%\u201d of ISIS\u2019s territory had been conquered.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I took over, Syria was infested with ISIS. It was all over the place. And now you have very little ISIS, and you have the caliphate almost knocked out,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will be announcing in the not too distant future 100% of the caliphate, which is the area \u2013 the land \u2013 the area \u2013 100. We\u2019re at 99% right now. We\u2019ll be at 100.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
