<\/a><\/p>\nGermany\u2019s defence minister has confirmed that \u201ca\u00a0united EU military is becoming a reality,\u201d after her ally and Chancellor Angela Merkel backed Emmanuel Macron\u2019s call for a \u201creal European army.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cEurope\u2019s army is already taking shape,\u201d Ursula von der Leyen wrote<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in an opinion piece for Handelsblatt <\/em>on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cGermany and France are the driving forces in defence,\u201d Ms von der Leyen boasted, adding that \u201cWe\u2019re moving even further ahead with our close partner France\u201d after the two countries agreed<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to sign a \u201cnew Elys\u00e8e Treaty\u201d which, amongst other efforts to, in effect, merge aspects of the two countries, includes common defence.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cOur stated goal is for European nations to speak with a co-ordinated voice in the United Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cGermany has just started a two-year stint as a non-permanent member alongside France on the UN Security Council.
