Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Bremen chairman of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Frank Magnitz, is battling for his life after sustaining a gaping wound to his head following an attack by three unknown assailants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Magnitz was rushed to the hospital on Monday night after suffering a serious head injury following a <em>\u201cpolitically-motivated attempted assassination,\u201d<\/em> Bremen AfD <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/afd.hb\/photos\/a.169613486531811\/1154122924747524\/?type=3&amp;theater\">said<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in a statement, posting a graphic image of the injured chairman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Armed with wooden sticks, the three men beat the politician repeatedly on the head and kicked him while he was already on the ground until a construction worker saw the assault and tried to intervene. Ich werde mich morgen zu diesem  feigen und widerw\u00e4rtigen Anschlag \u00e4u\u00dfern. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fBjRbgthHU\">pic.twitter.com\/fBjRbgthHU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Prof. Dr. J\u00f6rg Meuthen (@Joerg_Meuthen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Joerg_Meuthen\/status\/1082405400291536899?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 7, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><em>\u201cToday is a black day for democracy in Germany,\u201d<\/em> the AfD said, noting that Magnitz remains in serious condition. <em>\u201cHe was beaten half dead,\u201d<\/em> AfD national spokesman J\u00f6rg Meuthen wrote on Twitter, calling the assault a <em>\u201ccowardly and disgusting plot.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">As police continue their hunt for the attackers, German politicians have begun condemning the brutality of the incident. <em>\u201cI hope the perpetrators will soon be investigated &amp; sentenced,\u201d<\/em> said Germany\u2019s Green party MP, Cem \u00d6zdemir, adding that there is no justification for violence <em>\u201ceven against the AfD.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Authorities have yet to determine the motives behind the attack, but with its growing popularity, the opposition AfD party has become a target of increasing criticism and attacks over its anti-immigration and other ultraconservative policies.
