The German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs has supported a brochure<\/a><\/strong><\/span> that aims at changing the behavior\u00a0of preschool-aged children who are raised by what the brochure\u2019s authors call \u201cright-wing\u201d parents who oppose \u201cgender\u201d theory, \u201csexual diversity,\u201d the \u201csexualization\u201d of children, and \u201cimmigration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Many Germans are protesting the brochure, calling it unacceptable for the state to intrude into the lives of families. Some have noted how such an intrusion is similar to what had been previously known in Germany during the times of both National-Socialist (Nazi) and Communist dictatorships. The German government is said to have given 4,600 euro to the project.<\/span><\/p>\n

The brochure<\/a><\/strong><\/span> was published last month by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. Dr. Franziska Giffey, the social-democratic German Federal Minister for Family Affairs, contributed a foreword to the 60-page document. It is Giffey’s own ministry that funded the brochure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Giffey writes in the foreword that it is important to steer \u201cearly childhood education in a democratic manner and to orient it toward children’s rights.\u201d The goal is to form a \u201cself-confident life in a world of diversity.\u201d Children should grow up to become adaptive adults who are \u201cimmune to group-related misanthropy, as well as to violence that is motivated by religious or political goals,\u201d she writes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Giffey writes that \u201cour society has become increasingly polarized\u201d over the last few years, and while there has been \u201cmuch support for refugees,\u201d there can also be seen \u201ca significant increase of right-wing populist movements.\u201d She appears to be indirectly referring here to the 2015 mass immigration<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of one million refugees \u2014 mostly from Syria, Albania, Afghanistan, and Romania into Germany \u2014 and the related problems connected to this event.<\/span><\/p>\n

The minister calls the brochure an \u201cimportant work\u201d which she fully supports.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Diversity pedagogy\u2019 for pre-school children<\/h2>\n

Timo Reinfrank, the executive director of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, writes in his own introduction to the brochure that the issue at hand is about \u201ctaking into account the needs of children and about implementing their rights,\u201d as they have been laid down by the 1989 \u201cUN Convention on the Rights of the Child.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the brochure, authors Enrico Glaser and Judith Rahner write about \u201cextreme attitudes\u201d and \u201cinequality\u201d in general, and thus link what they refer to as \u201cracist\u201d positions to parents who oppose things like gender theory, sexual diversity, and immigration. Parents who have such attitudes are to be detected by their use of \u201cseemingly harmless words which stem, however, from the jargon of the New (or Old) Right and which imply a deeply misanthropic attitude.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For the authors, what is important about a \u201cDiversity Pedagogy\u201d in forming children is that it helps fight \u201cthe expansion of right-wing populism.\u201d For the authors, it is “right-wing” parents who foster \u201cracist debates about flight and asylum\u201d and \u201crefugees,\u201d who foster \u201cfear of indoctrination or ‘premature sexualization of our children’, that is to say the rejection of sexual pedagogy and education concerning gender and sexual diversity,\u201d and who foster fear of \u201can Islamization of the Occident.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For the authors of this brochure, it is \u201cpart of the educational task to teach children gender equality and the diversity of gender identities and ways of life.\u201d To accept these ways of life is \u201cpart of a democratic attitude,\u201d which \u201cis crucial in order to avoid discrimination because of the sex or sexual orientation and in order to empower inter- and transsexual children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally,\u201d the authors continue, \u201cfor many children, it is a lived reality to grow up in a rainbow family and thus should also be the lived-out reality in pre-school institutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the eyes of the authors, \u201cright-wing populist, neo-Right, or religious-fundamentalist groups stir up hatred against the communication of diversity with the help of defamatory words such as ‘genderism’, ‘gender madness’ [\u201cGenderwahn<\/em>\u201d], or, as we said, ‘premature sexualization’. Meant here is an alleged ‘re-education of our children’, who then supposedly cannot anymore be ‘real’ girls and boys.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The authors connect this attitude with \u201canti-feminist, but also homo-, inter- and trans-phobic positions.\u201d The authors point their fingers at average Germans, saying that these so-called right-wing populist attitudes are now to be found \u201cwith the middle of society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As Glaser and Rahner see it, these so-called racist attitudes have increased \u201csince 2015,\u201d corresponding to the time when mass immigration into Germany took place. \u201cRepresentative population studies and polls show the huge amount of prejudices and group-related misanthropy in the so-called middle of society,\u201d they state. In the view of these authors, such prejudices and attitudes are now being presented \u201cin state parliaments and even in the Lower House of Parliament.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Racist family\u2019<\/h2>\n

The state-funded brochure provides examples of attitudes in children (and parents) that must be addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Esther Lehnert and Professor Heike Radvan \u2013 members of the Foundation’s Gender and Racism Working Group \u2013 give the case of a brother and sister in pre-school who \u201ctell little to the class about what they did over the weekend.\u201d They are, instead, \u201cquiet and passive.\u201d \u201cAt the same time, there are no so-called disciplinary problems, these children seem to be especially obedient.\u201d Additionally, the two children are said to show \u201ctraditional gender roles\u201d: \u201cThe girl wears dresses and braids; at home she is being instructed in house-and-needlework; the boy is physically being strongly challenged and drilled.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The authors characterize such attitudes and conduct as coming from what they call a \u201cracist family\u201d [v\u00f6lkisch<\/em> family].<\/span><\/p>\n

In such cases, write the authors, it is recommended to teach such children (as well as their parents) about \u201cchildren’s rights\u201d and the existence of \u201cdiversity.\u201d As a countermeasure, \u201ccorners for rough play could be set up which are not only for boys, and ‘snuggle corners’ that are not only for girls\u201d; the meals, they say, could be culturally diverse and also the pedagogical material could have different ethnic backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

The authors state that \u201cauthoritarian and gender-stereotype parenting styles limit the manifold possibilities of children and [adversely] affect their development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The authors cite another example of attitudes in children (and parents) that must be addressed, this time regarding gender theory. They paint the scenario of a mother who is upset at a teacher for letting a male child dress up as a girl in the pre-school dress-up and make-up corner. \u201cA boy lets his fingernails be painted by them [other children].\u201d The next day, the mother of that boy comes and \u201cdeclares that this has a bad influence upon her child; children should not be further confused; boys are boys, girls are girls, and she herself wishes that her boy ‘will later turn out to be a real man.’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The proper response of the teacher, say the authors, is to \u201cexplain that gender diversity and tolerance are welcomed at the pre-school\u201d and that children should be encouraged to \u201cexperiment with themselves.\u201d Such children should be exposed to appropriate \u201creading materials and games\u201d and should be \u201camong others for make-up and dress up games.\u201d The authors then state how the teacher is to respond when the mother \u201cloudly rejects this,\u201d and uses phrases such as \u201c’premature sexualization,’\u201d declaring that children should not be \u201cindoctrinated here with this ‘gender nonsense’\u201d and threatens to \u201craise her children herself.\u201d The teacher must tell the mother that her \u201cassumption\u201d that boys do not paint their fingernails points to her own \u201cgender-specific, social roles\u201d that \u201care being given\u201d to her son.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the perspective of children\u2019s rights, the authors continue, and in light of professional assessments, \u201cgender-stereotypical interventions do not properly perceive the needs and demands of the individual child.\u201d Children, they add,\u00a0 are thus being \u201cdeprived of possibilities for an individual development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the \u201cpedagogy of diverse lifestyles\u201d and the \u201cfreedom of choice in socialization,\u201d such a mother who rejects her son’s painting his fingernails, \u201chas to be located in the context of neo-Right or fundamentalist ideologies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the representatives of such rightist ideological movements, the authors especially name Gabriele Kuby<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, author of The Global Sexual Revolution<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, whom they call an \u201cultra-conservative Catholic author.\u201d They point out that Kuby has spoken out against the \u201cpremature sexualization\u201d of children. \u201cThe New Right and Christian-fundamentalist actors have then picked up this word\u201d and turned it now into a \u201cbattle slogan,\u201d they explain. The authors criticize those who promote \u201cfamilistic…initiatives\u201d\u00a0(The word “familistic” — “familistisch” — seems to mean here people who support the traditional family and desire to strengthen family ties).<\/span><\/p>\n

Families with such tendencies, the brochure explains, should be given to understand that \u201cfreedom of choice\u201d is important in \u201cprocesses of socialization\u201d among children.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brochure should be \u2018shredded\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A number of prominent German voices have<\/a> aired<\/a><\/strong><\/span> their outrage over the brochure. Gunnar Schupelius, a German columnist, says<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>that the brochure \u201cgoes clearly too far.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not the duty of the state and of pre-schools to check and correct the way of life of the parents,\u201d he comments. If one allows the state to \u201cget access to the private life of families\u201d in this manner, he adds, then \u201ca principal\u00a0line is crossed.\u201d Then, it could quickly happen again what happened in the German past: \u201cIn the GDR [Communist Eastern Germany] and in the NS-State [National-Socialism], children were submitted to ideological control, and were even used as spies against their own parents,\u201d Schupelius explains. In his eyes, it should not be \u201cin a free country\u201d that the state would tell the teachers \u201cwhich political attitudes are to be assessed as dangerous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The political-cultural magazine Cicero<\/em> published an article<\/a><\/strong><\/span> on Nov. 28 criticizing the brochure<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. And, the brochure has caused a great stir in the prominent magazine DER SPIEGEL<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Different critics of the brochure have noted that the head<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, Anetta Kahane, has admitted<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to having been a Stasi-spy for the GDR (Communist Germany), working for the secret service spying on the German citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nadine Sch\u00f6n, the vice group chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the Lower Parliament, also sees that these recommendations from the brochure go too far. She describes the brochure as an \u201cinstruction by the state on how to spy on parents,\u201d which should immediately be shredded.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTeachers should care for our children, educate them and teach them values, but they should not check and correct the political orientation of the parents,\u201d as Sch\u00f6n says<\/a><\/strong><\/span> on her Twitter account, adding that the brochure contains \u201cabsurd ideas.\u201d The politician additionally criticizes the fact that the brochure only dwells on right-wing extremism without even mentioning the dangers coming from left-wing extremism. \u201cA brochure that aims at fighting prejudices is itself transmitting some,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The newspaper Berliner Kurier<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span> reported that many parents were indignant over the stereotypes that were being used in the brochure. The Amadeu Antonio Foundation has also reportedly received many calls from outraged parents: \u201cThe telephone has not been quiet for days \u2013 due to the many complaints,\u201d the report stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

As one Catholic commentator, who wishes to remain anonymous, says concerning the brochure: \u201cOne can clearly see here a new form of social engineering.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Just as earlier the sociologists of the Frankfurt School (Horkheimer, Adorno, Marcuse) had tried to create a ‘revolutionary personality’ \u2013 which they then renamed into ‘democratic personality,’ due to protests \u2013 so, too, do these state-funded experts try to create a new personality in Germany, a personality which is supportive of the globalized, pro-LGBT ideology. A person deeply rooted in the Christian Faith must stand here in the way of this,\u201d the source said.<\/span><\/p>\n
