{"id":179897,"date":"2018-12-02T07:43:30","date_gmt":"2018-12-02T07:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=179897"},"modified":"2018-12-04T07:15:29","modified_gmt":"2018-12-04T07:15:29","slug":"france-mulls-state-of-emergency-as-protests-escalate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=179897","title":{"rendered":"France mulls state of emergency as protests escalate"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Press TV \u2013 Nov 2, 2018<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/paris-protests.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-179898\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/paris-protests.jpg\" alt=\"paris protests\" width=\"540\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/paris-protests.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/paris-protests-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>The French government says it will consider imposing a\u00a0state of emergency in the wake of the country&#8217;s worst\u00a0civil unrest in more than a decade, which has caught authorities off guard.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Two weeks of nationwide protests against fuel\u00a0taxes and living costs by the &#8220;yellow vest&#8221; movement have shaken the county to its roots but\u00a0President Emmanuel Macron remains\u00a0defiant after calling the protesters &#8220;thugs&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Macron was to\u00a0hold an emergency meeting\u00a0with the prime minister and interior minister later on Sunday to\u00a0discuss the riots, a day after\u00a0accusing\u00a0protesters of seeking chaos in the European country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;We have to think about the measures that can be taken so\u00a0that these incidents don&#8217;t happen again,&#8221; government spokesman Benjamin\u00a0Griveaux said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">On Saturday, groups of young men with faces masked, some carrying metal\u00a0bars and axes, rioted on the streets of central Paris,\u00a0setting a dozen vehicles ablaze and torching\u00a0buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cI will always respect debate and I will always listen to opposition but I will never accept violence,\u201d Macron told a news conference at the G20 summit in Argentine\u2019s Buenos Aires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cNo cause justifies that authorities are attacked, that businesses are plundered, that passers-by or journalists are threatened, or that the Arc du Triomphe (monument) is defiled,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Macron also stressed that France would bring to justice anyone responsible for the violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Scores of people have been injured and more than 200 others been arrested in clashes between protesters and police in the capital, Paris, alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cThose guilty of this violence don\u2019t want change, they don\u2019t want improvements, they want chaos. They betray the causes that they pretend to serve and which they manipulate,\u201d Macron said. \u201cThey will be identified and brought to justice for their actions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">French officials said at least 75,000 people had turned out across France for the so-called yellow vest protests on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">It was the third weekend in which people staged protests against the government\u2019s economic reforms resulting in fuel tax hikes. Previous protests had already ended with violence, with two people killed and over 600 injured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">On Saturday, riot police forces in Paris used tear gas to disperse demonstrators after they were targeted by protesters hurling rocks and other projectiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_179899\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/paris-protests2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-179899\" class=\"wp-image-179899\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/paris-protests2-1024x640.jpeg\" alt=\"Demonstrators during a protest of \u201cyellow vests\u201d against rising oil prices and living costs, near the Champs Elysees in Paris, France, on December 1, 2018. Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Authorities said at least 287 people were arrested in Paris and 110 others sustained injuries, including 17 of the 5,000 police officers mobilized during the protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u2018Specialists in destruction\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The French Interior Ministry said nearly 190 fires had been put out and six buildings had been set alight during the latest violence in the capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Interior Minister Christophe Castaner attributed the violence to \u201cspecialists in sowing conflict, specialists in destruction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The protests first erupted last month in rural France among citizens who said they could not afford higher fuel taxes.
