{"id":179503,"date":"2018-11-23T06:55:33","date_gmt":"2018-11-23T06:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=179503"},"modified":"2018-11-25T07:10:20","modified_gmt":"2018-11-25T07:10:20","slug":"report-saudi-uae-coalition-cut-deals-with-al-qaeda-in-yemen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=179503","title":{"rendered":"Report: Saudi-UAE coalition &#8216;cut deals&#8217; with al-Qaeda in Yemen"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Introduction \u2013 Nov 22, 2018<\/h1>\n<h5>This isn\u2019t news but it illustrates the extent to which U.S. allies are in bed with Sunni militants like Al Qaeda and their successors, ISIS (Islamic State or ISIL), and by extension America&#8217;s own involvement in this unholy alliance.<\/h5>\n<h5>In the years following 9\/11 Al Qaeda was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/business-report\/economy\/al-qaeda-three-years-on-holy-war-and-a-label-for-terror-758207\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">main source of global terro<\/span>r<\/a>, or so a compliant corporate media repeatedly told us. Al Qaeda was linked to the<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2004_Madrid_train_bombings\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"> 2004 Madrid train bombings<\/span><\/a> and <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><a style=\"color: #ffff00;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/21_April_2004_Basra_bombings\">bombings in Basra in 2004<\/a><\/span> that killed hundreds, in addition to being implicated in numerous other terror outrages worldwide.<\/h5>\n<h5>However that&#8217;s changed as ISIS has increasingly taken over the role once played by al-Qaeda.<\/h5>\n<h5>As the Sunni-dominated Gulf states have reportedly <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><a style=\"color: #ffff00;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/people\/julian-assange-clinton-foundation-isis-same-money-saudi-arabia-qatar-funding-a7397211.html\">financed the expansion of ISIS<\/a><\/span> (ISIL or Islamic State) into this role, they&#8217;ve also formed closer working ties with al-Qaeda.<\/h5>\n<h5>At the very least U.S. officials know about this and at some level may even be involved.<\/h5>\n<h5>Now in its efforts to contain Iran the U.S. is indirectly forging ties with the same group that until recently was still <span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><a style=\"color: #ffff00;\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1386493\/on-the-17th-anniversary-of-9-11-al-qaeda-lives-on\/\">officially designated as a major terror outfit<\/a><\/span>. Meaning that the U.S. and its allies are no longer at odds with al-Qaeda, they are now fighting alongside them against a mutual foe, the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.<\/h5>\n<h5>How long before the U.S. reaches a similar arrangement with ISIS and people wake up to the fact that the whole War on Terror is a staged-managed charade? Ed.<\/h5>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Report: Saudi-UAE coalition &#8216;cut deals&#8217; with al-Qaeda in Yemen<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Al-Jazeera \u2013 Aug 2, 2018<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_179511\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Hundreds-of-al-Qaeda-fighters-were-reportedly-recruited-to-join-the-Saudi-led-coalition.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-179511\" class=\"wp-image-179511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Hundreds-of-al-Qaeda-fighters-were-reportedly-recruited-to-join-the-Saudi-led-coalition.jpg\" alt=\"Hundreds of al Qaeda fighters were reportedly recruited to join the Saudi led coalition\" width=\"540\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Hundreds-of-al-Qaeda-fighters-were-reportedly-recruited-to-join-the-Saudi-led-coalition.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Hundreds-of-al-Qaeda-fighters-were-reportedly-recruited-to-join-the-Saudi-led-coalition-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-179511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hundreds of al Qaeda fighters were reportedly recruited to join the Saudi led coalition<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A military coalition battling Houthi rebels secured secret deals with al-Qaeda in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/yemen.html\">Yemen<\/a>\u00a0and recruited hundreds of the group&#8217;s fighters, a news report said on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">For more than two years, a Saudi-led alliance &#8211; backed by US logistical and weapons support &#8211; claimed it crushed al-Qaeda&#8217;s ability to carry out attacks from Yemen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However, an investigation by The Associated Press found the coalition has been paying some <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/al-qaeda.html\">al-Qaeda<\/a> commanders to leave key cities and towns while letting others retreat with weapons, equipment, and wads of looted cash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Hundreds of al-Qaeda members were recruited to join the coalition as soldiers, the report said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Key figures in the deal-making said the United States was aware of the arrangements and held off on drone attacks against the armed group, which was created by <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/asia\/2011\/05\/20115235148217423.html\">Osama bin Laden<\/a>\u00a0in 1988.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The deals uncovered by the AP investigation reflect the contradictory interests of the two wars being waged simultaneously in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In one conflict, the US is working with its Arab allies &#8211; particularly the UAE &#8211; with the aim of eliminating al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). But the larger mission is to win the civil war against the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">And in that fight, al-Qaeda fighters are effectively on the same side as the Saudi-led coalition and, by extension, the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Elements of the US military are clearly aware that much of what the US is doing in Yemen is aiding AQAP and there is much angst about that,&#8221; said Michael Horton, a fellow at the Jamestown Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;However, supporting the UAE and Saudi Arabia against what the US views as Iranian expansionism takes priority over battling AQAP and even stabilising Yemen,&#8221; Horton said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8216;A farce&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Coalition-backed fighters actively recruit al-Qaeda fighters &#8211; or those who were recently members &#8211; because they are considered exceptional on the battlefield, according to on-the-ground interviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Horton said much of the war on al-Qaeda by the UAE and its allied fighters is &#8220;a farce.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;It is now almost impossible to untangle who is AQAP and who is not since so many deals and alliances have been made,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Pentagon recently vigorously denied any complicity with al-Qaeda fighters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Since the beginning of 2017, we have conducted more than 140 strikes to remove key AQAP leaders and disrupt its ability to use ungoverned spaces to recruit, train and plan operations against the US and our partners across the region,&#8221; Navy Commander Sean Robertson, a Pentagon spokesman, wrote in an email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A senior Saudi official said the Saudi-led coalition &#8220;continues its commitment to combat extremism and terrorism&#8221;. A UAE government spokesperson did not respond to questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">New recruits<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Concerned by the rise of the Houthi rebels, <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, the United Arab Emirates,\u00a0and a coalition of Arab states launched a military offensive in 2015 in the form of a massive air campaign aimed at re-installing the government of President <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2012\/02\/2012219133034774204.html\">Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Al-Qaeda is leveraging the chaos to its advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;The US is certainly in a bind in Yemen,&#8221; said Katherine Zimmerman, a research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t make sense that the United States has identified al-Qaeda as a threat, but that we have common interests inside of Yemen and that, in some places, it looks like we&#8217;re looking the other way.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Within this complicated conflict, al-Qaeda says its numbers &#8211; which US officials have estimated at 6,000 to 8,000 members &#8211; are rising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In February, Emirati troops and their Yemeni government fighter allies declared the recapture of al-Said, a district of villages running through the mountainous province of Shabwa &#8211; an area al-Qaeda had largely dominated for nearly three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">It was painted as a crowning victory in a months-long offensive known as Operation Swift Sword.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">But weeks before those forces&#8217; entry, a string of pick-up trucks mounted with machine guns and loaded with masked al-Qaeda fighters drove out of al-Said unmolested, according to a tribal mediator involved in the deal for their withdrawal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Under the terms of the agreement, the coalition promised al-Qaeda members it would pay them up to 100,000 Saudi riyals ($26,000) to leave, according to Awad al-Dahboul, the province&#8217;s security chief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">His account was confirmed by the mediator and two Yemeni government officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Under the accord, thousands of local tribal fighters were to be enlisted in the UAE-funded Shabwa Elite Force militia. For every 1,000 fighters, 50 to 70 would be al-Qaeda members, the mediator and two officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Unite with &#8216;the devil&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">For many Yemenis, al-Qaeda is simply another faction on the ground &#8211; a very effective one, well-armed and battle-hardened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Its members are not shadowy strangers. Over the years, AQAP has woven itself into society by building ties with tribes, buying loyalties, and marrying into major families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Power players often see it as a useful tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Hadi&#8217;s predecessor as Yemen&#8217;s president, long-ruling strongman Ali Abdullah Saleh, set the model. He took billions in US aid to combat al-Qaeda after the <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/events\/september-11.html\">9\/11 attacks<\/a>, even as he recruited its fighters to battle his rivals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The branch is following guidance from global al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri to focus on fighting Houthi rebels, another top AQAP member said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The impact of the intertwining of al-Qaeda fighters with the coalition campaign is clearest in Taiz, Yemen&#8217;s largest city and centre of one of the war&#8217;s longest-running battles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In 2015, Houthis laid siege to the city, occupying surrounding mountain ranges, sealing the entrances, and shelling it mercilessly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Taiz residents rose up to fight back, and coalition cash and weapons poured in &#8211; as did al-Qaeda and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/isis-isil.html\">ISIL<\/a>, also known as ISIS) fighters, all aimed at the same enemy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">One liberal activist took up arms alongside other men from his neighbourhood to defend the city, and they found themselves fighting side-by-side with al-Qaeda members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;There is no filtering in the war.
