Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">With a current ban on deporting refugees back to Syria due to expire in December, interior ministers of German states are expected to decide whether to extend the measure at a meeting later this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A confidential Foreign Ministry report obtained by\u00a0German media says that it is unsafe to\u00a0send people back to\u00a0Syria, citing persisting violence and human rights abuses in\u00a0the war-torn Arab country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Perceived Threats<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">According to\u00a0the 28-page classified document seen by\u00a0S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung, RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland, and broadcasters NDR and WDR, &#8220;in no part of\u00a0Syria is there comprehensive, long-term and reliable protection for\u00a0persecuted people.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">It adds that men between\u00a0the ages of\u00a018 and 42 could be drafted into\u00a0the military on\u00a0their return, and would likely face jail time for\u00a0desertion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The document also cites, among\u00a0other things, alleged \u201cdocumented cases\u201d of\u00a0people, including women and children, \u201cdetained and tortured for\u00a0activities of\u00a0other family members whom the regime considers to\u00a0be hostile.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The report will likely be discussed when Germany&#8217;s state interior ministers meet later this month to\u00a0re-examine the freeze on\u00a0repatriating Syrians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In recent days, the ministers of\u00a0Bavaria and Saxony have called for\u00a0Syrians who have committed crimes or are seen as\u00a0a terrorist threat to\u00a0be sent back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Saxony-Anhalt&#8217;s interior minister, on\u00a0the other hand, argues that the moratorium should be extended to\u00a0the end of\u00a0June. Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, who has also backed the idea of\u00a0deporting criminals, appealed for\u00a0a careful assessment of\u00a0the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Annual Vote <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In 2012, all German states agreed to\u00a0suspend the deportation of\u00a0Syrian refugees due to\u00a0escalating violence in\u00a0their home country. The suspension has since\u00a0been extended by\u00a0an annual vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Even though the United Nations says fighting in\u00a0Syria has recently eased, it still warns that no country should send refugees back against\u00a0their will.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Not Really Victims of\u00a0War<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">According to\u00a0Wolfram Goel, editor of\u00a0the Bayernkurier, the Christian Social Union party newspaper, many of\u00a0the refugees and asylum seekers from\u00a0Syria and Iraq are not really victims of\u00a0the war, but\u00a0offenders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cThey say that they have been murderers or torturers in\u00a0Syria or Iraq in\u00a0favour of\u00a0IS [Daesh] or other groups \u2013 reason for\u00a0which they expect cruel revenge at\u00a0home. Many are ordinary criminals,\u201d Goel told Sputnik.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Just two examples: On 13 October, 2018, a group of\u00a0seven Syrians and a German man raped an 18-year-old girl in\u00a0Freiburg. Also in\u00a0Freiburg, a Syrian man raped and killed a 19-year-old woman and threw her body into\u00a0a nearby creek, in\u00a0October 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Wolfram Goel also said that now that a greater part of\u00a0Syria is not experiencing war anymore and the terrorists are mainly defeated, \u201cnormal\u201d people could return and help rebuild their country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Another problem is that many so-called \u201cSyrians\u201d are not really Syrians but\u00a0come from\u00a0other Arab countries like\u00a0Morocco, Algeria and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cThey bought Syrian passports because the Germans in\u00a02015\/16 accepted Syrians without\u00a0asking too many questions. The riots, thefts and sexual harassment of\u00a0New Year\u2019s Eve 2015\/16 in\u00a0Cologne \u2013 many of\u00a0these things were done by\u00a0North Africans,\u201d Wolfram Goel noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Interior Ministers of\u00a0the conservative CDU and CSU are strongly in\u00a0favour of\u00a0getting rid of\u00a0criminal Syrians, which means sending them back to\u00a0Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Chancellor Angela Merkel&#8217;s CDU\/CSU bloc is currently represented by\u00a0nine state ministers, while the centre-left SPD, which opposes restarting deportations, is represented by\u00a0seven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The 7-year conflict in\u00a0Syria has killed more than\u00a0360,000 people and displaced millions.
