Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p data-piano-inline-content-wrapper=\"\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The most elite US-trained forces in Afghanistan suffered a devastating defeat to the Taliban in what&#8217;s often referred to as the country&#8217;s &#8220;safest district&#8221; over the weekend, in yet another sign the war is a lost cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Early on Sunday, a company of roughly 50 Afghan special-forces commandos was almost entirely destroyed in the rural district of Jaghori, according to a report from <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/12\/world\/asia\/afghanistan-taliban-attack-jaghori-district.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The New York Time<\/strong><\/span>s.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Over 30 of the US-trained commandos were killed, The Times said, in a district, that is &#8220;famous&#8221; for how peaceful it is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The scene in Jaghori&#8217;s capital, Sang-e-Masha, was reportedly quite a depressing one following the fighting, as soldiers and policemen fought back tears as they piled bodies and bandaged commandos wandered the streets in &#8220;apparent despair.&#8221; Officials discussed the best escape plan as the Taliban surrounded the district, which is apparently on the brink of falling to the Taliban.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The US has dedicated a massive amount of time and resources to training Afghan forces with the ultimate goal of ramping down America&#8217;s role in a war it&#8217;s been fighting for over 17 years \u2014 the longest in US history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In October, America&#8217;s top general in the Middle East, Joseph Votel, expressed his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/0fd19818023d4ce19f455c8ac466d24d\">confidence in Afghan security forces<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in terms of their ability to take on the Taliban.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">But the Taliban has made major gains over the past year or so, and controls or contests <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/09\/08\/world\/asia\/us-misleads-on-afghanistan.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>61% of the country&#8217;s districts<\/strong><\/span>.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Last month, the Taliban took a shot at America&#8217;s top general in Afghanistan, Gen. Austin &#8220;Scott&#8221; Miller, and barely missed. It also managed to wound another US general in the process. During the same incident, <a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/r-top-afghan-official-killed-in-shooting-us-general-unhurt-2018-10\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>a powerful Afghan police chief, General Abdul Raziq, was killed<\/strong><\/span>.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Beyond the Taliban, the Islamic State also has a foothold in Afghanistan and claimed responsibility for a suicide attack in the capital, Kabul, on Monday that led to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/afghanistan-suicide-bomber-targets-protesters-kabul-181112094659291.html\">at least six deaths<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and wounded more than 20 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The US has spent nearly two decades, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/after-17-years-many-afghans-blame-us-for-unending-war\/2018\/11\/13\/cc2f8812-e71f-11e8-8449-1ff263609a31_story.html?utm_term=.47812cb0eae3\">lost over 2,400 soldiers, and spent roughly $900 billion<\/a><\/strong><\/span> on this disastrous war.
