We feel comfortable back-to-back.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>A new deep dive by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-05\/trump-s-trade-war-is-making-russia-and-china-comrades-again?srnd=premium\">Bloomberg<\/a>\u00a0examining the growing closeness of Russia and China as both face down increased U.S. pressures and sanctions contains some deeply revealing quotes by analysts as well as a high official\u00a0in the Chinese communist government reacting to Trump&#8217;s trade war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Russia and China, Bloomberg begins, are currently\u00a0<strong>&#8220;as close as at any time in their 400 years of shared history.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">This is due to a perhaps &#8220;forced&#8221; and largely externally driven developing reconfiguration of the Eastern hemisphere&#8217;s superpowers\u00a0\u2014\u00a0for most of their history longtime rivals\u00a0\u2014\u00a0which involves, as\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-05\/trump-s-trade-war-is-making-russia-and-china-comrades-again?srnd=premium\">Bloomberg summarizes<\/a><\/strong><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Chinese investment and energy purchases make it easier for Russia to resist economic pressure over Ukraine; Russian sales of oil, missile defense systems, and jets are changing U.S. calculations in the Pacific by\u00a0<strong>raising the potential cost of any future showdown with China<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Fu Ying, the chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of China\u2019s National People\u2019s Congress, said while confirming the reality that\u00a0China and Russia now find\u00a0themselves in the same trenches:\u00a0<strong>\u201cI just hope that if some people in the U.S. insist on dragging us down the hill into Thucydides\u2019 trap, China will be smart enough not to follow.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Indeed to step back and review the breadth of Russia-China cooperation over the past couple years alone\u00a0<strong>reveals the full potential &#8220;cost&#8221; of a US-China conflict<\/strong>, given the ways Russia could easily be pulled in. Fu Ying articulated the increasingly common view from Beijing, that\u00a0\u201cThere is no sense of threat from Russia&#8221; and that\u00a0<strong>&#8220;We feel comfortable back-to-back.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">And participants in a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbr.org\/publication\/confronting-growing-china-russia-cooperation-options-for-congress\/\">recent study<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0by the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/0360665Z:US\">National Bureau of Asian Research<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, a Seattle-based think tank, actually agree. They were asked whether American policy was at fault for pushing China and Russia into closer cooperation, and alarmingly, as Bloomberg notes:\u00a0&#8220;Some among the 100-plus participants called for Washington to prepare for the worst-case scenario the realignment implies:\u00a0<strong>a two-front war<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>Here&#8217;s but a partial list of the way Sino-Russian relations have been transformed in recent years:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">China is now Russia\u2019s biggest single trade partner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Since 2015 Russia has been China&#8217;s top supplier of crude oil, displacing Saudi Arabia. Early this year\u00a0Russia ramped up its capacity\u00a0to pipe crude oil to China, to about 600,000 barrels per day, which is about double the prior capability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Increased coordination at the U.N. Security Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Regional coordination in Asia, such as Russia supplying the\u00a0engines for Chinese-Pakistani fighter jets, resulting in an increasingly worried India which is seeing Russia move into the Chinese orbit instead of being an arbiter in Chinese-Pakistani relations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The cooperative &#8220;NATO-lite&#8221;\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-06-10\/china-russia-solidify-growing-eastern-bloc-as-trump-rattles-g-7\">Shanghai Cooperation Organization<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The &#8220;bromance&#8221;\u00a0at recent summits\u00a0between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, who meet each other with increased regularity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Joint military exercises between the two\u00a0are now routine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">This year Russia supplied China with its most advanced S-400 air defense system as well as\u00a0Sukhoi SU-35 fighter aircraft<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Increased willingness on the part of Russia to thwart Washington&#8217;s argument that China is a threat to Moscow&#8217;s aims in the East.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The new &#8220;Power of Siberia&#8221; natural gas pipeline set to start pumping\u00a038 billion cubic meters (1.3 trillion cubic feet) of natural gas per year to northern China in December 2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Increasingly discovering non-conflicting interests:\u00a0Europe and China \u201care two independent destinations and two independent routes\u201d for gas and oil, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said in an October interview. \u201cWe do not see any need to redirect volumes.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">One observer of Sino-Russian relations and their increased military cooperation,\u00a0Florence Cahill, recently\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-09-11\/putin-and-xi-jinping-affirm-both-oppose-unilateralism-and-trade-protectionism\">summarized<\/a><\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0\u201cBoth Beijing and Moscow are looking to demonstrate that trade wars and sanctions will only push them to develop new alliances.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Cahill explained further,\u00a0<strong>\u201cAs long as their prevailing worldview is shaped by an animus towards a US-led international order, co-operation on all levels between Moscow and Beijing will likely be more pronounced than competition between them.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">This<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>echoes precisely what\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/2163793\/chinas-xi-jinping-russias-vladimir-putin-agree-boost-ties-amid\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>President Xi affirmed t<span style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\">o <\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Putin\u00a0<\/span><\/a>\u00a0during their last major summit:\u00a0<strong>\u201cBoth nations have to oppose unilateralism and trade protectionism, and build a new type of international relations and shared human destiny,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">It appears the blowback from Trump&#8217;s trade war with China will be a hastening in this &#8220;new type of relations&#8221;
