Readers will note how Dougherty, or more precisely those speaking through him, warned of how the &#8220;forces of darkness&#8221; are trying to foment division and conflict within America.<\/h5>\n<h5>Is this what inspired the vandal in the following report? Because that certainly seems to be what this troubled individual was trying to do. Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u00a0In a bizarre twist, the man who spray-painted anti-Semitic graffiti on a Brooklyn synagogue turned out to be \u201cqueer,\u201d black, former anti-hate-crime intern, James Polite: a 26-year-old with loving Jewish foster parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Less than a week after a gunman murdered 11 worshippers at a Pittsburgh synagogue, anti-Semitic graffiti was found scrawled inside Union Temple in Brooklyn\u2019s predominantly Jewish Prospect Heights neighborhood. The graffiti read <em>\u201cDie Jew Rats\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cHitler.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NYPD arrests James Polite \u2014 the man they say is in this surveillance picture &#8211; in connection with anti Semitic graffiti found inside Union Temple in Prospect Heights. He\u2019s believed to have also set fires outside schuls &amp; yeshivas in Williamsburg <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSNewYork?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CBSNewYork<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WMm4UznAvf\">pic.twitter.com\/WMm4UznAvf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jessica Layton (@JLaytonTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JLaytonTV\/status\/1058547127159283712?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A Democratic political event scheduled at the synagogue on Thursday night was canceled, and police investigated the incident as a hate crime. After being caught on the synagogue\u2019s CCTV cameras, James Polite was arrested on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Far from being an archetypal tattooed skinhead, Polite is a black former Democratic intern who had his college education bankrolled by the New York Times\u2019 \u2018Neediest Cases Fund.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Polite had a rough upbringing, according to a 2017 New York Times <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/14\/nyregion\/after-years-in-foster-care-intern-adopted-by-city-hall-catches-a-break.html\">profile<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. He told the Times he identifies as <em>\u201cqueer\u201d<\/em> and felt misunderstood at home. As a young teenager, he requested that he be placed in foster care, and spent the following years shunted from home to home.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In summary that old <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytimes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@nytimes<\/a> puff piece Ryan dug up on James Polite does appear to be the same person. Instead of the success story from those pages his life has turned a dark direction. Under Quinn\u2019s tutelage, Polite worked on anti-hate-crime initiatives and lent a hand to her unsuccessful bid for mayor in 2013. In return, Quinn, who referred to Polite as <em>\u201cthe adopted child of the Quinn administration\u201d<\/em> wrote him a glowing recommendation to Brandeis University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">At the same time, an array of do-gooders chipped in and gave Polite a helping hand. Josh Waletzky and Jenny Levison, a Brooklyn Jewish couple on a mission to foster an <em>\u201cLGBTQ youth\u201d<\/em> took Polite into their home, and charity group Children\u2019s Aid facilitated the placement. When Polite began his studies at Brandeis, the Neediest Cases Fund helped him financially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Polite struggled in college, and smoked marijuana to cope with stress. After a leave of absence in 2015, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder but managed to resume his studies after some time away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u2018Civil war is here\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Before last week\u2019s vandalism, the man appears to have been unstable. He railed against Jews in a series of Facebook posts, tagging his adopted parents. Polite <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/UkMug\">posted<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>a grainy cell-phone picture of himself burning an American flag, and wrote that a new <em>\u201ccivil war is here.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><em>Nobody gotta die. Mexico, latin America, carribean (sic) vs. Jew n*gger pigs. One person touch me this whole shit a smoking,\u201d<\/em> he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In the comments, friends urged Polite to seek professional help, and his one-time mentor Quinn wrote after his arrest that she was <em>\u201csimply and utterly devastated.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><em>\u201cI knew this young man,\u201d<\/em> she wrote.<em> \u201cAnd while he has experienced hardship that most people can\u2019t ever imagine, his actions are inexcusable.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DxMF4uQ1r8\">pic.twitter.com\/DxMF4uQ1r8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Christine Quinn (@chriscquinn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chriscquinn\/status\/1058767091564716037?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">While Polite\u2019s life seems to have gone down a dark path, from New York Times poster boy to synagogue vandal, he is not the first unlikely suspect to be busted for hate crimes in recent years.
