The planned breakthrough will reportedly take place ahead of signing a proposed UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration pact. Several countries such as the US and Austria have already backed out of the treaty.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some 20,000 migrants are currently preparing to\u00a0break through\u00a0the Bosnian-Croatian border near\u00a0Velika-Kladusa, Kronen Zeitung<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span> reported, citing an anonymous department head from\u00a0the Austrian Interior Ministry. The migrant crowd is purportedly made up\u00a0of young men of\u00a0Pakistani, Iranian, Algerian and Moroccan descent as\u00a0opposed to\u00a0earlier migrant “waves” from\u00a0Syria. And there are almost no women in\u00a0this group.<\/span><\/p>\n

But what troubles the Interior Ministry most are the reports that many of\u00a0these men are armed with\u00a0knives. Media outlets have already reported one incident, involving a border officer who was attacked by\u00a0knife-wielding migrant.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Interior Ministry is not worried about\u00a0the massive migrant group coming to\u00a0Austria because most of\u00a0them want to\u00a0reach the northern part of\u00a0the EU, where states provide better conditions for\u00a0refugees.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Migrants want to [go to] Germany, to\u00a0Scandinavian countries. Austria is not the best option for\u00a0them right now,” the source in\u00a0the ministry said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The growing crisis at\u00a0the Bosnian-Croatian border comes a month ahead of\u00a0a UN conference in\u00a0Morocco, where The Global Compact for\u00a0Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration will be adopted. The pact is described as\u00a0a framework to\u00a0maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of\u00a0migration. Despite the agreement’s stated goal, a number of\u00a0states, namely the US, Croatia, Hungary, Austria, have backed out\u00a0of the pact, while several others are weighing this option.<\/span><\/p>\n

In October, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz criticized some of\u00a0the clauses of\u00a0the proposed agreement due to\u00a0substantive concerns over\u00a0threats to\u00a0the country’s sovereignty. Kurz is known for\u00a0his hardline stance on\u00a0illegal migration. In one of\u00a0his most recent proposals, the chancellor suggested that the EU should send migrants rescued at\u00a0sea to\u00a0countries outside\u00a0the bloc’s borders.<\/span><\/p>\n
