John Vibes, an independent reporter who contributed to Free Thought,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/sputniknews.com\/us\/201810121068814924-Reporters-Pages-Shut-Down-By-Facebook\/\">accused<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Facebook of \u201cfavoring mainstream sources and silencing alternative voices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In comments published here for the first time, <strong>a neoconservative Washington insider has apparently claimed a degree of credit for the recent purge \u2014 and promised more takedowns in the near future.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cRussia, China, and other foreign states take advantage of our open political system,\u201d remarked Jamie Fly, a senior fellow and director of the Asia program at the influential think tank the German Marshall Fund, which is\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gmfus.org\/our-partners\">funded by the U.S. government and NATO<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>\u201cThey can invent stories that get repeated and spread through different sites. So we are just starting to push back. Just this last week Facebook began starting to take down sites. So this is just the beginning.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Fly went on to complain that<strong> \u201call you need is an email\u201d to set up a Facebook or Twitter account, lamenting the sites\u2019 accessibility to members of the general public.<\/strong> He predicted a long struggle on a global scale to fix the situation and pointed out that to do so would require constant vigilance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Fly made these stunning comments to Jeb Sprague, who is a visiting faculty member in sociology at the University of California-Santa Barbara and co-author of this article. If he was to be believed, the latest purge was motivated by politics, not spam prevention, and was driven by powerful interests hostile to dissident views, particularly where American state violence is concerned.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Jamie Fly, rise of a neocon cadre<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Jamie Fly is an influential foreign policy hardliner who has spent the last year lobbying for the censorship of \u201cfringe views\u201d on social media<\/span>.<span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>Over the years, he has advocated for a military assault on Iran, a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424127887324481204578177892875085874\">regime change war<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on Syria, and hiking military spending to unprecedented levels. He is the embodiment of a neoconservative cadre.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Like so many second-generation neocons, Fly\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/fly_jamie\/\">entered government<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>by burrowing into mid-level positions in George W. Bush\u2019s National Security Council and Department of Defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In 2009, he was appointed director of the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/foreign_policy_initiative\/\">Foreign Policy Initiative<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(FPI), a rebranded version of Bill Kristol\u2019s Project for a New American Century, or PNAC. The latter outfit was an umbrella group of neoconservative activists that first made the case for an invasion of Iraq as part of a wider project of regime change in countries that resisted Washington\u2019s sphere of influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">By 2011, Fly was advancing the next phase in PNAC\u2019s blueprint by\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atimes.com\/atimes\/Middle_East\/MJ19Ak03.html\">clamoring<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0for military strikes on Iran. \u201cMore diplomacy is not an adequate response,\u201d he argued. A year later, Fly\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/the-case-for-regime-change-in-iran\/\">urged<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0the US to \u201cexpand its list of targets beyond the [Iranian] nuclear program to key command and control elements of the Republican Guard and the intelligence ministry, and facilities associated with other key government officials.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Fly soon found his way into the Senate office of Marco Rubio, a neoconservative pet project, assuming a role as his top foreign policy advisor. Amongst other interventionist initiatives, Rubio has taken the lead in promoting harsh economic sanctions\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/venezuelanalysis.com\/analysis\/14073\">targeting Venezuela<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, even advocating for a U.S.\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/marco-rubio-us-military-solution-venezuela-1101123\">military assault<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0on the country. When Rubio\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign floundered amid a mass revolt of the Republican Party\u2019s middle American base against the party establishment, Fly was forced to cast about for new opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>He found them in the paranoid atmosphere of<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/elite-fixation-russiagate\/\">Russiagate<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that formed soon after Donald Trump\u2019s shock election victory.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PropOrNot sparks the alternative media panic<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>A journalistic insider\u2019s account of the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign,\u00a0Shattered, revealed that \u201cin the days after the election, Hillary declined to take responsibility for her own loss.\u201d<\/strong> Her top advisers were summoned the following day, according to the book, \u201cto engineer the case that the election wasn\u2019t entirely on the up-and-up \u2026 Already, Russian hacking was the centerpiece of the argument.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>Less than three weeks after Clinton\u2019s defeat, <\/strong>the Washington Post\u2019s Craig Timberg published a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/russian-propaganda-effort-helped-spread-fake-news-during-election-experts-say\/2016\/11\/24\/793903b6-8a40-4ca9-b712-716af66098fe_story.html\">dubiously sourced report<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0headlined, \u201cRussian propaganda effort helped spread \u2018fake news.\u2019\u201d<strong> The article hyped up a McCarthyite effort by a shadowy, anonymously run organization called PropOrNot to blacklist some 200 American media outlets as Russian \u201conline propaganda.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The alternative media outfits on the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.propornot.com\/p\/the-list.html\">PropOrNot blacklist<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>included some of those recently purged by Facebook and Twitter, such as The Free Thought Project and Anti-Media. Among the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alternet.org\/media\/washington-post-promotes-shadowy-website-accuses-200-publications-russian-propaganda-plants\">criteria<\/a><\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0PropOrNot identified as signs of Russian propaganda were \u201cSupport for policies like Brexit, and the breakup of the EU and Eurozone\u201d and \u201cOpposition to Ukrainian resistance to Russia and Syrian resistance to Assad.\u201d PropOrNot called for \u201cformal investigations by the U.S. government\u201d into the outlets it had blacklisted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">According to Craig Timberg, the Washington Post correspondent who uncritically promoted the media suppression initiative, <strong><em>Propornot was established by \u201ca nonpartisan collection of researchers with foreign policy, military and technology backgrounds.\u201d <\/em><\/strong>Timberg quoted a figure associated with the George Washington University Center for Cyber and Homeland Security, Andrew Weisburd, and cited a report he wrote with his colleague, Clint Watts, on Russian meddling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>Timberg\u2019s piece on PropOrNot was promoted widely by\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/neeratanden\/status\/801975199021273088\">former top Clinton staffers<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danpfeiffer\/status\/802205196516368384\">celebrated<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>by ex-Obama White House aide Dan Pfeiffer as \u201cthe biggest story in the world.\u201d<\/strong> But after a wave of stinging criticism, including in the pages of the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/the-propaganda-about-russian-propaganda\">New Yorker<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, the article was amended with an editor\u2019s note stating, \u201cThe [Washington] Post\u2026 does not itself vouch for the validity of PropOrNot\u2019s findings regarding any individual media outlet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">PropOrNot had been seemingly exposed as a McCarthyite sham, but the concept behind it \u2014 exposing online American media outlets as vehicles for Kremlin \u201cactive measures\u201d \u2014 continued to flourish.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The birth of the Russian bot tracker \u2014 with U.S. government money<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>By August, a new, and seemingly related initiative appeared out of the blue, this time with backing from a bipartisan coalition of Democratic foreign policy hands and neocon Never Trumpers in Washington.<\/strong> Called the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/securingdemocracy.gmfus.org\/\">Alliance for Securing Democracy<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(ASD), the outfit aimed to expose how supposed Russian Twitter bots were infecting American political discourse with divisive narratives. It featured a daily \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/dashboard.securingdemocracy.org\/\">Hamilton 68<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u201d online dashboard that highlighted the supposed bot activity with easily digestible charts. Conveniently, the site avoided naming any of the digital Kremlin influence accounts it claimed to be tracking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>The initiative was immediately\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnpodesta\/status\/892818113531654147?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fmeduza.io%2Fen%2Ffeature%2F2017%2F08%2F03%2Ftracking-russian-propaganda-in-real-time\">endorsed by John Podesta<\/a><\/span>, <\/strong>the founder of the Democratic Party think tank the Center for American Progress, and former chief of staff of Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign. Julia Ioffe, the Atlantic\u2019s chief Russiagate correspondent,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/juliaioffe\/status\/892778139939688448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fmeduza.io%2Fen%2Ffeature%2F2017%2F08%2F03%2Ftracking-russian-propaganda-in-real-time\">promoted<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0the bot tracker as \u201ca very cool tool.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Unlike PropOrNot, the ASD was sponsored by one of the most respected think tanks in Washington, the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gmfus.org\/about-gmf\">German Marshall Fund<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, which had been founded in 1972 to nurture the special relationship between the US and what was then West Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>The German Marshall Fund is substantially\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/archive.li\/L9pLG\">funded by Western governments<\/a><\/span>, and largely reflects their foreign-policy interests.<\/strong> Its top two financial sponsors, at more than $1 million per year each, are the U.S. government\u2019s soft-power arm the U.S. Agency for International Development (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/grayzoneproject.com\/2018\/06\/19\/ned-nicaragua-protests-us-government\/\">USAID<\/a><\/strong><\/span>) and the German Foreign Office (known in German as the Ausw\u00e4rtiges Amt). The U.S. State Department also provides more than half a million dollars per year, as do the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and the foreign affairs ministries of Sweden and Norway. It likewise receives at least a quarter of a million dollars per year from NATO<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_178330\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/USAid.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178330\" class=\"size-full wp-image-178330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/USAid.png\" alt=\"The US government and NATO are top donors to the German Marshall Fund\" width=\"500\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/USAid.png 500w, https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/USAid-300x289.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-178330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The US government and NATO are top donors to the German Marshall Fund<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Though the German Marshall Fund did not name the donors that specifically sponsored its Alliance for Securing Democracy initiative, it hosts a who\u2019s who of bipartisan national-security hardliners on the ASD\u2019s\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/securingdemocracy.gmfus.org\/about-us\/advisory-council\/\">advisory council<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, providing the endeavor with the patina of credibility. They range from neocon movement icon Bill Kristol to former Clinton foreign policy advisor Jake Sullivan and ex-CIA director Michael Morell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>Jamie Fly, a German Marshall Fund fellow and Asia specialist, emerged as one of the most prolific promoters of the new Russian bot tracker in the media. <\/strong>Together with Laura Rosenberger, a former foreign policy aide to Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 campaign, Fly appeared in a series of\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2018\/02\/26\/trump-russia-putin-bots-global-politico-transcript-217082\">interviews<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and co-authored several\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/congress-blog\/politics\/383919-steps-congress-can-take-to-defend-america-against-foreign\">op-eds<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0emphasizing the need for a massive social media crackdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screenshot-Rosenberger-Fly.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-178331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screenshot-Rosenberger-Fly.png\" alt=\"Screenshot Rosenberger Fly\" width=\"500\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screenshot-Rosenberger-Fly.png 500w, https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screenshot-Rosenberger-Fly-300x273.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">During a March 2018<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4718707\/russian-disinformation-efforts\">interview on C-Span<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, Fly complained that \u201cRussian accounts\u201d were \u201ctrying to promote certain messages, amplify certain content, raise fringe views, pit Americans against each other, and we need to deal with this ongoing problem and find ways through the government, through tech companies, through broader society to tackle this issue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>Yet few of the sites on PropOrNot\u2019s blacklist, and none of the alternative sites that were erased in the recent Facebook purge that Fly and his colleagues take apparent credit for, were Russian accounts. Perhaps the only infraction they could have been accused of was publishing views that Fly and his cohorts saw as \u201cfringe.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">What\u2019s more, the ASD has been forced to admit that the mass of Twitter accounts it initially identified as \u201cRussian bots\u201d were not necessarily bots \u2014 and may not have been Russian either.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>\u201cI\u2019m not convinced on this bot thing\u201d<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A November 2017\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alternet.org\/print\/grayzone-project\/terror-cranks-sold-america-russia-panic\">investigation<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0by Max Blumenthal, a co-author of this article, found that <em><strong>the ASD\u2019s Hamilton 68 dashboard was the creation of \u201ca collection of cranks, counterterror retreads, online harassers and paranoiacs operating with support from some of the most prominent figures operating within the American national security apparatus.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">These figures included the same George Washington University Center for Cyber and Homeland Security fellows \u2014 Andrew Weisburd and Clint Watts \u2014 that were cited as experts in the Washington Post\u2019s article promoting PropOrNot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Weisburd, who has been described as one of the brains behind the Hamilton 68 dashboard, once maintained a one-man, anti-Palestinian web monitoring initiative that specialized in doxxing left-wing activists, Muslims and anyone he considered \u201canti-American.\u201d More recently, he has taken to Twitter to spout off murderous and homophobic fantasies about Glenn Greenwald, the editor of the Intercept \u2014 a publication the ASD flagged without explanation as a vehicle for Russian influence operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>Watts, for his part, has testified before Congress on several occasions to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2017\/11\/01\/goog-n01.html\">call<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on the government to \u201cquell information rebellions\u201d <\/strong>with censorious measures including \u201cnutritional labels\u201d for online media. He has received fawning publicity from corporate media and been rewarded with a contributor role for NBC on the basis of his supposed expertise in ferreting out Russian disinformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_178332\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clinton-Watts.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178332\" class=\"wp-image-178332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Clinton-Watts.jpg\" alt=\"Clint Watts has urged Congress to \u201cquell information rebellions\u201d. Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/grayzoneproject.com\/2018\/07\/02\/clint-watts-world-how-americas-top-russian-disinformation-expert-pushes-disinformation-to-justify-censorship\/\">under questioning<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0during a public event by Grayzone contributor Ilias Stathatos, <strong>Watts admitted that substantial parts of his testimony were false, and refused to provide evidence to support some of his most colorful claims about malicious Russian bot activity.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In a separate interview with\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/miriamelder\/stop-blaming-russian-bots-for-everything#.btm9Ee3BKb\">Buzzfeed<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, Watts appeared to completely disown the Hamilton 68 bot tracker as a legitimate tool. \u201cI\u2019m not convinced on this bot thing,\u201d Watts confessed. He even called the narrative that he helped manufacture \u201coverdone,\u201d and admitted that the accounts Hamilton 68 tracked were not necessarily directed by Russian intelligence actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong><em>\u201cWe don\u2019t even think they\u2019re all commanded in Russia \u2014 at all. We think some of them are legitimately passionate people that are just really into promoting Russia,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>Watts conceded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">But these stunning admissions did little to slow the momentum of the coming purge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Enter the Atlantic Council<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In his conversation with Sprague, the German Marshall Fund\u2019s Fly stated that he was<strong> working with the Atlantic Council in the campaign to purge alternative media from social media platforms like Facebook.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Atlantic Council is another Washington-based think tank that serves as a gathering point for neoconservatives and liberal interventionists pushing military aggression around the globe. It is\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/support\/supporters\">funded<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0by NATO and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alternet.org\/grayzone-project\/while-turkish-bodyguards-brutalized-protesters-dc-think-tank-connected-erdogan\">repressive, US-allied governments<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Turkey, as well as by Ukrainian oligarchs like Victor Pynchuk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>This May, Facebook\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/dfrlab\/why-were-partnering-with-facebook-on-election-integrity-19f0ca39db2e\">announced<\/a>\u00a0a partnership with the Atlantic Council\u2019s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab) to \u201cidentify, expose, and explain disinformation during elections around the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Atlantic Council\u2019s DFRLab is notorious for its\u00a0zealous conflation of legitimate online dissent with illicit Russian activity, embracing the same tactics as PropOrNot and the ASD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Ben Nimmo, a DFRLab fellow who has built his reputation on flushing out online Kremlin influence networks,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/sputniknews.com\/europe\/201804211063771932-Smeared-Russian-Bot-UK-Man-Demolishes-Sky-News\/\">embarked<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on an embarrassing witch hunt this year that saw him misidentify several living, breathing individuals as Russian bots or Kremlin \u201cinfluence accounts.\u201d Nimmo\u2019s victims included\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NOUHXqGsJTs\">Mariam Susli<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, a well-known Syrian-Australian social media personality, the famed Ukrainian concert pianist\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vallisitsa\/status\/978559232508416000?lang=en\">Valentina Lisitsa<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, and a British pensioner named Ian Shilling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In an interview with Sky News, Shilling delivered a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=300&amp;v=EJogpc3Uy34\">memorable tirade<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0against his accusers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>\u201cI have no Kremlin contacts whatsoever; I do not know any Russians, I have no contact with the Russian government or anything to do with them,\u201d <\/strong>he exclaimed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong>\u201cI am an ordinary British citizen who happens to do research on the current neocon wars which are going on in Syria at this very moment.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">With the latest Facebook and Twitter purges, ordinary citizens like Shilling are being targeted in the open, and without apology.
