I didn&#8217;t care as neither myself nor anyone I know reads it. He also threatened me with the Times&#8217; lawyers last year. The saving grace is knowing that Kamm is afflicted by serious depression. No great surprise. He is probably occupied by a multitude of demons. But in the process, he\u2019s angered anti-war activists and critics of British and Western foreign policy, who claim he\u2019s been biased against them.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Political analyst and former UK British ambassador Craig Murray\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.craigmurray.org.uk\/archives\/2018\/05\/the-philip-cross-affair\/\">described<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>the scale of Cross\u2019s activities:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Philip Cross\u201d has not had one single day off from editing Wikipedia in almost five years. \u201cHe\u201d has edited every single day from 29 August 2013 to 14 May 2018. Including five Christmas Days. That\u2019s 1,721 consecutive days of editing. 133,612 edits to Wikipedia have been made in the name of \u201cPhilip Cross\u201d over 14 years. That\u2019s over 30 edits per day, seven days a week. And I do not use that figuratively: Wikipedia edits are timed, and if you plot them, the timecard for \u201cPhilip Cross\u2019s\u201d Wikipedia activity is astonishing if it is one individual.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">So who is Philip Cross? The BBC commented:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;BBC Trending has been able to establish that he lives in England and that Philip Cross is not the name he normally goes by outside of Wikipedia.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The excellent Five Filters website looked deeply into these issues and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikipedia.fivefilters.org\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>noted<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>of the person writing as Cross:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;After George Galloway, Media Lens is his second most edited article on the site. Cross is responsible for almost 80% of all content on the Media Lens entry.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">This is deeply flattering for a two-man organization run on donations facing some pretty heavyweight\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikipedia.fivefilters.org\/\">competition<\/a><\/strong><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Cross calls his Wikipedia targets \u201cgoons\u201d. The list includes anti-war politician George Galloway, former MP Matthew Gordon-Banks, historian, human rights activist and former UK ambassador Craig Murray, investigative journalist Dr Nafeez Ahmed, Edinburgh University professor Tim Hayward, Sheffield University professor Piers Robinson, and media analysis group Media Lens.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At least one <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Wikipedia?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Wikipedia<\/a> editor &#39;gets it&#39; on what the &#39;Philip Cross&#39; affair could mean for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Wikipedia?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Wikipedia<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BlmJbVm8DG\">https:\/\/t.co\/BlmJbVm8DG<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sfpSfwZjAj\">pic.twitter.com\/sfpSfwZjAj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Media Lens (@medialens) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/medialens\/status\/996989011808935936?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 17, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Canary website\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/discovery\/analysis-discovery\/2018\/05\/23\/the-philip-cross-scandal-how-wikipedia-is-being-used-against-left-wing-journalists\/\">reported\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/span>of Media Lens:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Its Wikipedia page has had 851 edits by Cross (57.27% of page total) and is the editor\u2019s second most active page.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Canary has itself fallen under Cross\u2019s crosshairs. The website\u2019s Wikipedia page was created on 2 June 2016 at 11:41 pm. Cross made his first edit at 8:55 am the next morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Is Cross offering a neutral, impartial view of our work? In May 2018, he tweeted:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;@medialens is two blokes called David who the mainstream usually ignore with good reason, but are of interest because they are so catastrophically wrongheaded.\u2019 (Tweet, May 7, 2018; since deleted)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In the Sunday Herald, Ron McKay<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/opinion\/16222196.The_Dirty_Diary__Tilda_s_Polanski_shame__wiki_propaganda_wars_and_Lenny_s_brush_with_the_law\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>noted<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>that Cross\u2019s targets tend to have two characteristics in common:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;You don\u2019t have to be a conspiracy theorist to see that there are common threads here. All of those [targeted] are\u2026 prominent campaigners on social media and in the mainstream media vigorously questioning our foreign policy. All have also clashed with Oliver Kamm, a former hedge-fund manager and now Times leader writer and columnist. All have been edited on Wikipedia by Andrew Philip Cross whom the complainants believe, without conclusive evidence, to be Kamm after dark. He denies it.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Professor Tim Hayward of Edinburgh University\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tim_Hayward_\/status\/999541645161975808\">asked<\/a><\/strong><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Does Oliver Kamm have Wikipedia editor Philip Cross doing his bidding in amplifying smears and vendettas? Evidence coming to light suggests serious questions concerning possible misuse of media influence and unethical conduct.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Cross did not appreciate this and other interventions from Professor Hayward. Two weeks earlier, Cross had sent him this disturbing comment:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;You may be having an uncomfortable conversation with one of your Associate Deans\/Deans in the near future &amp; his wife. Pity you blocked me before you had a close look at my followers.\u2019 (Tweet, May 12, 2018; since deleted)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">As part of its investigation, the BBC interviewed a highly experienced Wikipedia administrator known as Orange Mike, who specialises in dealing with conflicts of interest, asking him:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;One of the people whose pages he [Cross] has been editing, and has edited over 1800 times, is George Galloway, and he says he knows that Philip Cross is being paid to do this. Do you think that\u2019s likely?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Orange Mike replied:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;I would not even be remotely surprised. The people who hate Galloway the most are often powerful and often rich. And the idea that they could find someone to use as their tool would not surprise me in the least. Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A tweeter, Malone (now called Read JFK),\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_jrvansant\/status\/999575648719912961\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>commented<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>to us on the coincidence that Cross has often edited our Wikipedia page on the same day that Kamm has mentioned us on Twitter:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;kamm\u2019s tweets crossreferenced with cross\u2019s medialens wiki edits. 82 edits on the exact same days kamm tweeted about you! at least 243 including surrounding days (243 is a severe underestimate).\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">We are not alone. Tweeter RLM\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Reg_Left_Media\/status\/1000004238964068353\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>noted<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>the people Kamm has tweeted about on the same day Cross has edited their page:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Chris Hedges, Max Mosley, Mark Wadsworth, Peter Oborne, LabourLeave, David Ward, Ken Loach, Nick Timothy, Alex Salmond, Nafeez Ahmed, Owen Jones, Diane Abbott, Tim Hayward, Piers Robinson, Craig Murray, Alex Nunns, Glenn Greenwald, Media Lens, \u201cDouma Chemical Attack\u201d, Robert Fisk (edited a day before, not the same day), George Galloway, Jeremy Corbyn, Media Lens, Seumas Milne, Edward S. Herman, Paul Flynn, Afshin Rattansi, Mo Ansar, John Pilger, Andrew Murray, Jim Fetzer (tweeted the day before, not the same day).\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Former UK ambassador Craig Murray\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.craigmurray.org.uk\/archives\/2016\/03\/the-astonishing-case-of-the-doppelganger\/\">described\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/span>what happened to his Wikipedia entry after he strongly criticized Kamm:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;The very next day, 8 February, my Wikipedia page came under obsessive attack from somebody called Philip Cross who made an astonishing 107 changes over the course of the next three days. Many were very minor, but the overall effect was undoubtedly derogatory. He even removed my photo on the extraordinary grounds that it was \u201cnot typical\u201d of me.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">We\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/medialens\/status\/997541688271831040\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>noted<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>on Twitter:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;The word \u201cKamm\u201d appears in the @Wikipedia entry for Media Lens twelve times. \u201cMedia Lens\u201d appears in Oliver Kamm\u2019s entry\u2026 zero times.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The thoroughness of Cross\u2019s campaign against us has been impressive. In 2005, then BBC Newsnight editor Peter Barron\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/programmes\/newsnight\/4426334.stm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>wrote<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>of how Media Lens had \u2018prolifically let us know what they think of our coverage, mainly on Iraq, George Bush and the Middle East, from a Chomskyist perspective\u2019. He added graciously:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;In fact I rather like them. David Cromwell and David Edwards, who run the site, are unfailingly polite, their points are well-argued and sometimes they\u2019re plain right.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">These were remarkable and important comments. A senior editor who had himself come under intense criticism from us and hundreds of our readers was nevertheless able to recognize that our points were reasonable and well-intentioned, that we were not nasty people pursuing some dark agenda. Quite reasonably, someone added Barron\u2019s comments to our Wikipedia page. The addition was noticed by Cross, who\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/wikipedia.fivefilters.org\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>replaced<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>the quotation with this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Peter Barron, the former editor of the BBC\u2019s \u201dNewsnight\u201d commented in November 2005 that although Cromwell and Edwards \u201care unfailingly polite\u201d, he had received \u201chundreds of e-mails from sometimes less-than-polite hommes engages \u2013 they\u2019re almost always men \u2013 most of whom don\u2019t appear to have watched the programme\u201d as a result of complaints instigated by Media Lens.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Notice that in editing the Newsnight editor\u2019s quote, Cross had to carefully read through Barron\u2019s original article to find less positive comments to patch in. This was meticulous work to remove a positive opinion about us, not a rush job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The Five Filters website\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fivefilters\/status\/999172054141333504\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>tweeted<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>on a similar intervention:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;This made me laugh. Cross, who is obsessed with Media Lens, removes David Edwards\u2019 (Media Lens co-editor) book from Chomsky\u2019s Wikipedia bibliography section because \u201cobscure book by obscure writer\u201d https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?diff=721546372 \u2026 Unbelievable! @medialens\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Tweeter Leftworks\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/leftworks1\/status\/998671749142188032\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>commented<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>on edits made to the Wikipedia page for the Iraq Body Count (IBC) website:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Guess who\u2019s been looking after the IBC page on Wikipedia and removing all references to @MediaLens? The one and only Philip Cross!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">As some of our readers will know, we did\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.medialens.org\/index.php\/alerts\/alert-archive\/2006\/430-paved-with-good-intentions-iraq-body-count-part-1.html\">a lot of work<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0explaining how media favourite, Iraq Body Count, was recording perhaps ten per cent of the Iraqi death toll. Philip Cross has seen to it that our work on this issue has been completely erased from Wikipedia history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2018Absolutely No Evidence\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Apart from Cross, in the 17 years we have been working on Media Lens, only one other person has subjected us to a relentlessly negative campaign that is in any way comparable. Almost ten years ago, we\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.medialens.org\/index.php\/alerts\/alert-archive\/2009\/585-dancing-on-a-mass-grave-oliver-kamm-of-the-times-smears-media-lens.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>documented<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>how Oliver Kamm had been pursuing us relentlessly across the internet \u2013 writing blogs about us, posting grisly comments about our genocide \u2018denial\u2019 under online interviews with us, and often warning journalists who mentioned our work \u2013 or who, god forbid, praised our work \u2013 or who interacted with us in any way, that we were blood-drenched \u2018genocide deniers\u2019 and\/or seedy \u2018misogynists\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In 2013, Mehdi Hasan, formerly senior political editor at the New Statesman, now a columnist with The Intercept,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mehdirhasan\/status\/299502825615003648\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>commented<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>to Kamm on Twitter:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;I cant help but be amused at the way you swoop down in at any mention of MediaLens. Got \u2019em on an alert?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Despite continuing to seek out and attack us online, Kamm has shown admirable restraint in not extending his campaign to Wikipedia. We are not aware that he has added a single edit to either of our individual pages, nor to our Media Lens page. It seems that, for Kamm, when it comes to Wikipedia, it is always the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christmas_truce\">Christmas truce<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">And by the way, we have never edited Kamm\u2019s page on Wikipedia. In fact, we have never made any political edits on Wikipedia at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Daniel Finkelstein, Baron Finkelstein of Pinner, Kamm\u2019s colleague and friend at The Times,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dannythefink\/status\/1008985598437351424\">sent\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/span>a flurry of tweets strongly rejecting the idea that anyone was using Cross to target political enemies:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;But literally so far there is absolutely no evidence. My ears are wide open. My fingers aren\u2019t in my ears. I am ready, waiting, willing to see or hear this evidence. But there isn\u2019t any. Just a bloke called Philip Cross making some edits.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">When Five Filters responded by sending serious evidence relating to Cross\u2019s edits, Lord Finkelstein\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dannythefink\/status\/1009157458001002496\">replied<\/a><\/strong><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;I appreciate your interest but really I just haven\u2019t got time for studying some blokes Wikipedia edits.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Wikipedia Intervenes<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia, initially\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jimmy_wales\/status\/994264792062885895\">dismissed\u00a0<\/a>complaints that Cross might be acting as a sockpuppet for politically biased individuals or organizations:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Because as far as I can tell so far, those complaints are so wrong as to be risible. Look into it further. Or show me some diffs [differences between successive versions of a page]\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ccffff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jimmy_wales\/status\/996783919537192961\">And<\/a><\/strong><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;The whole claim appears so far to be completely ludicrous.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However, public pressure was so great that Wikipedia presumably felt compelled to investigate Cross\u2019s activities. In July, the Wikipedia Arbitration Committee\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ccffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Arbitration\/Requests\/Case\/BLP_issues_on_British_politics_articles\/Proposed_decision#Proposed_remedies\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>delivered<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/a>a majority on two proposals:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Philip Cross\u2026 is warned to avoid editing topics with which he has a conflict of interest. Further, he is warned that his off-wiki behavior may lead to further sanctions to the extent it adversely impacts the English Wikipedia.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">&#8220;Philip Cross\u2026 is indefinitely topic banned from edits relating to post-1978 British politics, broadly construed. This restriction may be first appealed after six months have elapsed, and every six months thereafter.
