Danish lawmakers have gone on the offensive against interference in public debate, sparking criticism that a new proposal, which could entail criminal liability for expressing opinions similar to those of Moscow, may become a step toward silencing public debate.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to\u00a0a bill brought forward in\u00a0local parliament<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, Danes could face a jail term if they voice dissent over\u00a0the government’s position on\u00a0Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The proposal, which is said to\u00a0be meant to “strengthen efforts against\u00a0illegal influence from\u00a0foreign intelligence services,” would introduce criminal penalties for\u00a0perceived “meddling” in\u00a0public debates and attempts to\u00a0influence decision-making. Crimes committed during\u00a0an election campaign would entail a maximum prison term of\u00a012 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Berlingske, the country’s oldest newspaper, has bashed the bill<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, claiming that it would narrow the scale of\u00a0political conversation in\u00a0Denmark.<\/span><\/p>\n

Berlingske’s Flemming Rose argues that the law could be stretched to\u00a0the point where a Danish director is targeted for\u00a0changing a burnt-out light bulb following\u00a0the advice of\u00a0a foreign intelligence agent.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also warns that a Danish subject could face punishment for\u00a0sharing an opinion in\u00a0the local media that anti-Russia sanctions damage the country or attempting to\u00a0publicly downplay concerns over\u00a0the Russia-led Nord Stream 2 pipeline project (Denmark has so far failed to\u00a0give its approval of\u00a0the pipeline passing through\u00a0its territorial waters).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The bill is understood to\u00a0mean an attempt to\u00a0influence public opinion in\u00a0Denmark and concrete decisions in\u00a0both the private and public sectors as\u00a0it targets legitimate opinions that can be taken to\u00a0be propaganda.<\/span><\/p>\n

This comes at\u00a0a time when Russia is facing a flurry of\u00a0accusations from\u00a0Western countries that it had hacked doping agencies and other international organizations in\u00a0a bid to\u00a0influence public opinion. Russia has vehemently dismissed the allegations as “spy mania.”<\/span><\/p>\n
