<\/a><\/p>\nThe deployment of advanced S-300 missiles to Syria has set off alarm bells in the US and Israel<\/span><\/p>\n The Pentagon\u2019s decision to\u00a0conduct additional tests for\u00a0its F-35 stealth fighter means that it is not so sure about\u00a0the plane\u2019s invisibility to\u00a0Russia\u2019s S-300 missiles, the Indian newspaper EurAsian Times wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe fact that the Americans tried to\u00a0make the plane invisible does not mean that it really is. And it\u2019s not for\u00a0nothing that the Pentagon suddenly announced the need for\u00a0additional F-35 tests, recently. This is clear evidence that the US themselves do not believe in\u00a0the competence of\u00a0F-35 against\u00a0the S-300 air defense systems,\u201d the news site added.<\/span><\/p>\n According to\u00a0EurAsian Times, the F-35 Lightning II was developed with\u00a0an eye to\u00a0defeating the S-300 system the US already had access to. As soon as\u00a0Iran began to\u00a0negotiate with\u00a0Russia about\u00a0buying the S-300, Israel reportedly paid Greece a lot of\u00a0money to\u00a0get access to\u00a0these systems to\u00a0study them. Besides, the Americans bought parts of\u00a0the complex through\u00a0Belarus.<\/span><\/p>\n However, the S-300 system the Americans obtained \u201cwas put into\u00a0service back in\u00a01978 and the difference between\u00a0modern technology and the one in\u00a01978 is enormous,\u201d the website noted.<\/span><\/p>\n Commenting on\u00a0the S-300 deliveries to\u00a0Syria, EurAsian Times concluded that they will \u201cseriously increase the Syrian air defense, but\u00a0only in\u00a0one region, since\u00a0it was announced that only four SAM systems were being delivered.<\/span><\/p>\n The Israeli air force is large enough and well equipped to\u00a0withstand such protection. But the risk of\u00a0losses, in\u00a0this case, will be much higher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Israel\u2019s Regional Cooperation Minister Tzachi Hanegbi said earlier this month that the S-300\u2019s capabilities have long been factored in\u00a0Israel\u2019s strategic planning.<\/span><\/p>\n The former general director of\u00a0the main design bureau of\u00a0the Almaz-Antei concern, Igor Ashurbeili, said that part of\u00a0the S-300 technology had been stolen by\u00a0the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n At the same time, the Pentagon announced that full-scale combat tests of\u00a0fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighters would begin in\u00a0November, and not in\u00a0September, as\u00a0earlier planned due to\u00a0Lockheed Martin\u2019s failure to\u00a0upgrade the plane\u2019s computer software on\u00a0time.<\/span><\/p>\n In all, Israel is to\u00a0receive 50 F-35A Lightning II fighter jets from\u00a0the United States, which, after\u00a0an upgrade, will be renamed F-35I Adir. Currently, Israel has eight such aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n The S-300PM system, supplied to\u00a0Syria, is based on\u00a0the S-300PS complex, which entered service in\u00a0Russia in\u00a01993.<\/span><\/p>\n The upgraded system is capable of\u00a0destroying aircraft and hypersonic cruise missiles at\u00a0a distance of\u00a0up to\u00a0200 kilometers (124 miles).<\/span><\/p>\n Moscow has supplied batteries of\u00a0advanced S-300 air defense missiles to\u00a0Syria to\u00a0protect Russian troops deployed in\u00a0the war-torn Arab country in\u00a0the wake of\u00a0the recent downing of\u00a0a Russian reconnaissance plane during\u00a0an Israeli airstrike in\u00a0Latakia.<\/span><\/p>\n
