{"id":175650,"date":"2018-09-02T06:19:04","date_gmt":"2018-09-02T06:19:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=175650"},"modified":"2021-07-14T19:37:19","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T19:37:19","slug":"imf-backs-south-africas-plan-to-confiscate-land-from-white-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=175650","title":{"rendered":"IMF backs South Africa&#8217;s plan to confiscate land from white farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Russia Today &#8212; August 31, 2018<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/South-african-farmer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-174907\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/South-african-farmer.jpg\" alt=\"South african farmer\" width=\"540\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/South-african-farmer.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/South-african-farmer-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The International Monetary Fund (IMF) approves of South Africa\u2019s controversial land reform as long as the highly contentious process is \u201crules-based\u201d and transparent, according to the fund\u2019s representative in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Montfort Mlachila, the IMF\u2019s senior resident representative in South Africa, said that the regulation must not damage agricultural output and put at risk food supplies for the country\u2019s citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><em>\u201cWe are in full support of the need to undertake land reforms in order to address the issues of inequality,\u201d<\/em> Mlachila said in an interview with Reuters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><em>There is need to have a transparent, rules-based, and constitutional process that leads to desirable outcomes. It is particularly important not to undermine agricultural production and food security.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The widely debated land reform was proposed by the country\u2019s ruling African National Congress (ANC) in 2015 and received the full support of the newly elected President Cyril Ramaphosa. The proposed measure will allow the South African government to expropriate land belonging to the country\u2019s white farmers without compensation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">A major part of South African farmlands is still owned by the country\u2019s white minority. The current president vowed to change the South African constitution to grant some of the land to the landless black majority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The draft reform, which reportedly provoked violent attacks and even murders of white farmers, triggered a great uproar internationally. Last week, US President Donald Trump ordered Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to closely study the issue. Earlier this year, the Australian government started issuing emergency visas for farmers facing violence in South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Last week, the ANC announced the withdrawal of the disputed draft by the Portfolio Committee on Public Works for further study. According to the committee\u2019s chairperson, Humphrey Mmemezi, the bill was referred to parliament on procedural grounds, but they couldn\u2019t duplicate a separate parliamentary process.
