\u201cThe situation is enough to make you cry in despair, or\u00a0vomit from\u00a0shame.\u201d \u2014 Jewish author David Weinberg in an article called <\/strong>Not So Holy Land<\/strong><\/em>, quoted below.<\/strong><\/h4>\n
They say she was 20 years old and was in the country for 15 years.<\/strong><\/h5>\n
This 40-year-old prostitute had worked for a year and two months at a brothel in Tel Aviv, not far from where another prostitute had committed suicide. On condition that we not reveal where she works, Jenny ( not her real name) agreed to sit down and discuss Israel\u2019s sex industry with us.<\/strong><\/h5>\n
\u201cSome days I only have two customers, others as many as 10,\u201d Jenny reveals.<\/h5>\n
Along with four other women, all in their mid-30s to early 40s, Jenny \u00a0works from 10am to 7pm a 9-hour day. (Sometimes from 11am to 8 pm). \u00a0The women watch Russian-language TV and smoke cigarettes on a small patio.<\/h5>\n
Another woman works the phones, providing details to the johns: \u201cNIS 200 (US$57) for half an hour, erotic massage, shared shower.\u201d She advertises the prostitutes\u2019 supposed attributes: \u201cYoung girl, hard but large breasts.\u201d<\/h5>\n

Which girl that refers to is not clear, since none of them match the glowing description.<\/h5>\n
According to estimates, some 15,000 women are involved in sex work in the Jewish state. A recent report found that 1,000 girls under the age of 18 are involved in some form of prostitution here. Underage boys and transgender teens are also involved.<\/h5>\n
Human trafficking has been common, with several thousand women being smuggled in from the former Soviet Union in the 1990s.<\/h5>\n
LD: Israeli pimps can buy women and girls from Russia, Ukraine and other former Soviet Unions for relatively small sums: for as little as $25 in the 1990s. An official report reads: \u201cWomen and children are taken from Russia mostly for prostitution. Their number is estimated at 30,000-60,000 a year. According to the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, over the past two decades, over 500,000 women were sold from Russia to other countries.\u201d See You Can Buy Women and Girls as Slaves for as Little as $25<\/a><\/span>. They [the brothel owners] concentrate on neighborhoods such as 1 Finn Street, a \u201cnotorious drug and prostitution den,\u201d which was recently torn down next to the central bus station. We hear stories about the Hasan Arfa area near Yitzhak Sadeh Street, a warren of tin shacks and garages supposedly overrun by drug users and sex workers.<\/h5>\n
Right now, there are reportedly 300 brothels in Tel Aviv.<\/h5>\n
Rebecca Hughes of social action organization Atzum\u2019s Task Force on Human Trafficking writes, \u201cThere is a dangerous gap between the glamorous depiction of prostitution in pop culture and the reality that prostituted women, many of them minors, are forced to contend with on a daily basis. Most women do not choose to be prostitutes.\u201d<\/h5>\n
The brothels operate openly, advertising their services on the street; young men are paid to scatter business-sized cards on sidewalks throughout the city. These vividly colored cards usually include pornographic photos of the women and advertise the services they are willing to offer. Some of the girls offer to visit customers in motels, or even at home. Just give them a phone call and they will be there.<\/h5>\n
Other women claim to offer \u201call varieties of massage, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.\u201d<\/h5>\n
Some even specify \u201cNO SEX!\u201d<\/h5>\n
LD: What kinky perversions and fetish fantasies must they be offering if NORMAL SEX is not on the menu? The mind boggles. A little investigation reveals that virtually every form of sex on offer in these Israeli brothels is a dreary variation of the solitary vice. As one of the prostitutes quoted below points out: \u201c<\/strong>Most [of my clients] just want a nude massage and to \u2018finish\u2019 on me.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n
Masturbation, according to Freud, is \u201cthe primal habit\u201d. This the Jews know and promote masturbation on an epic scale throughout the world, which is why it is well known that Jews are the main force behind\u00a0 the $100 billion a year porn industry<\/a><\/span>. [LD]\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n
Brothels and massage parlors are located everywhere in Tel Aviv. There is not a neighborhood that doesn\u2019t have them. For NIS 350 ($100) you can have a \u201ctantric massage\u201d from 10pm to midnight. Elsewhere, in \u201cthe nicest place in Tel Aviv near the sea,\u201d you can enjoy a \u201cspoiling massage\u201d<\/strong> at the hands of \u201cfour young, beautiful women.\u201d<\/h5>\n
In all, there are 44 massage parlors within 10 kilometers of\u00a0 the beach. They offer every type of woman. A \u201cfull-nude body massage\u201d, lasting 30 minutes, costs NIS 200 ($57). The age of the masseuses usually range from about 21 to 34. Most places had similar hours: open from 10am to 6pm with three to five women, then from 6pm to 4am with a new shift.<\/h5>\n
Outside 98 Hayarkon Street, an ugly, dilapidated building in an area undergoing gentrification, signs had been pasted to the sidewalk protesting that women worked 12-hour days and serviced 20 to 30 men a day. They were left over from the Saturday-night demonstration, outside the building where a woman named \u201cJessica\u201d had committed suicide. \u201cA house of prostitution is a rape center\u201d some signs said, while others proclaimed more starkly \u201cProstitution = Rape.\u201d<\/h5>\n
Laws in Israel, which seem to be rarely enforced, have criminalized solicitation of prostitution \u2013 but being a customer is not a crime.<\/h5>\n
The protesters alleged that women were forced into prostitution, that brothel security guards had supplied them with drugs. In other reports, heroin addiction was given as a reason for women entering prostitution, or staying in it. In 2011, then-MK Orit Zuaretz tried to introduce a bill to make it illegal for men to be clients of sex services. \u201cIf you buy a blood diamond, it is criminal; if you buy the body of a woman, it should be criminal, too. I don\u2019t understand why this is tolerated by the public in a Jewish state,\u201d the Kadima MK told the press at the time.<\/h5>\n
The legislation, which never passed, led to a strange incident in Ashdod, in which a 56-year-old man turned himself in to police to protest the issue, claiming he often frequented brothels.<\/h5>\n
THIS YEAR, a woman who allegedly made NIS 47 million ($13.5 million) from running Tel Aviv brothels was arrested. According to sources familiar with the story, she had managed a brothel on Ben-Yehuda Street that is now a hotel, which was open seven days a week and charged NIS 270 ($77) for sex. Police charges against this madam ran the gamut from pimping to creating a public nuisance and money-laundering.<\/h5>\n
If police really wanted to close these \u201chouses of shame,\u201d<\/strong> as they are called in Hebrew, they could easily do so. A quick \u00a0perusal of the free Banana <\/em>magazine that advertises sex services\u2014or simply picking up all the business cards scattered all over the sidewalks<\/strong> (see picture<\/a><\/strong><\/span>)\u2014would make it easier to crack down on the pimps and procuresses.<\/h5>\n
Jenny says she has never seen a policeman bother her place of business. A mother of an eight-year-old, Jenny lived in a central Israeli town before moving to Tel Aviv. She was born in Donetsk, Ukraine, and came to Israel more than a decade ago. Prostitution became a relatively convenient way to make money. With NIS 200 for a \u201cmassage,\u201d she takes home half of this sum (about $23).<\/h5>\n
She describes her daily routine. She doesn\u2019t use drugs or drink on the job. \u201cSome of the men are nice, others are not. Some want me to be like an acrobat. It can be difficult. But most just want a nude massage and to \u2018finish\u2019 on me.\u201d<\/strong><\/h5>\n
Those who want \u201cextras\u201d pay more in tips. \u201cI split the initial NIS 200 ($57) with the boss, but the tips I pocket myself. Why would I tell them about that?\u201d It seems the story is a kind of wink-wink-nod-nod, with the \u201cboss\u201d who isn\u2019t on the premises, and the madam who works the phones and knows the girls engage in oral or actual sex, though that\u2019s not on the menu of offerings.<\/h5>\n
\u201cExtras, you should talk to the girl,\u201d the woman explains over the phone. \u201cMassage, we offer massage,\u201d she says, but has to clarify. Men who pay for sex are expected to bring their own condoms, and the women dispose of the condoms after each act. \u201cWe don\u2019t keep them on the premises,\u201d she explains. \u201cThat way, if police come, it looks like a massage parlor.\u201d<\/h5>\n
Rooms are decorated with ugly wallpaper and air-conditioning units. A small personal shower is in one corner, with a chair, a place for the john to hang his clothes and a massage table. Towels are stacked in another corner and there are candles, oil and a clock.<\/h5>\n
A young woman in her 20s from Beersheba, originally from Ukraine, says she began her career in prostitution while in the IDF. She did her soldiering during the week and worked as a weekend prostitute.<\/h5>\n

LD: Many of these Jewish girls work as part-time prostitutes, masturbating Arab clients in massage parlors during the evening shift or at weekends. As many as 500 Israeli soldiers\u00a0 were recently reported to have been caught up in this network of vice. Not all the girls were Russians, though most were. A phone survey indicates that about 20 percent are Sabras (Israeli-born Jews). The rest are described as \u201cEuropeans,\u201d a euphemism for the former Soviet Union. About 10 percent of the girls are black Africans. They mostly come from Ethiopia, but are described for some reason as \u201cBrazilian.\u201d<\/h5>\n
One of the prostitutes is an Arab. From Haifa. \u201cI work from noon to 4am,\u201d she reveals. \u201cWhich isn\u2019t normal, but it\u2019s only once a week.\u201d She says she can make as much as NIS 1,600 for her 16-hour shift ($457)<\/h5>\n
Another woman was more negative about the situation:<\/h5>\n
\u201cThis is a crap country. The men are crap; they don\u2019t treat you like a person, they just want the service and to leave. I hate working here, but I have huge bills, I can\u2019t afford my apartment or my cellphone, and I am helping my brother and father pay for things.\u201d<\/strong><\/h5>\n
If these women were all addicted to heroin being forced on them by thugs guarding the door, it was not evident. The premises we visited had no men in them at all. Despite the stories claiming that most of the customers were Arab or haredi<\/em> (Orthodox Jews), the customers were generally Israeli Jewish men in their 30s and 40s. None of them were religious.<\/h5>\n
At one all-Russian massage parlor in south Tel Aviv near the beach, however, most of the customers appeared to be Arab men who had just gotten off work, with a few tourists poking their heads in.<\/h5>\n

Sex Slavery in Israel<\/h1>\n

The situation in Israel is far worse than this Jerusalem Post<\/em> article, written by Israeli Seth Frantzmen, makes out.<\/h5>\n
Only last week, Ha\u2019aretz news published this article:\u00a0Ten indicted for running one of Israel\u2019s biggest brothels in Tel Aviv<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. \u2013 The brothels, incidentally, used only\u00a0Schicksen<\/em>, or non-Jewish girls. Eight of those arrested were women. Their two brothels had an estimated total income in excess of $28 million over several years.<\/h5>\n
Sex slavery, it has to be noted, is universal and not confined to Israel. Only last year an attractive 14-year-old British girl was sold into sex slavery by her Albanian boyfriend and raped as many as 110 times a day for cash<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/h5>\n
Sex trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the world, netting $32 billion a year<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/h5>\n
My own researches reveal that sex slavery is common throughout the world and that the way it is often done is through heroin addiction. The girl is usually enticed into applying for a seemingly well-paid job. She is then brutally raped by her captor and injected with heroin. Her passport confiscated, she is now forced to work for her pimp (or his syndicate), with threats that her family will be killed if she refuses. The idea that this is happening in other parts of the world, but not in Israel, is absurd.<\/h5>\n
We have frequent reports of Russian, Moldavian and Eastern European girls abducted by Israeli pimps and forced into a horrendous life of prostitution in Tel Aviv involving 16-hour shifts. The Israeli police, as we can see from the Jerusalem Post<\/em> article above, are not interested in putting an end to these horrors. In many cases, they are probably to be found in league with the pimps and making use of the same brothels. An average pimp has 4-6 girls working for him and can earn up $150,000-$200,000 a year<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. The police would get their cut.<\/h5>\n

Innocent young girls, many of them underage, are kidnapped in Russia and Eastern Europe and forced into a life of prostitution in Tel Aviv. Locked up without food, subject to threats and violence by their Jewish pimps, these wretched girls are sometimes expected to sleep with up to sixty customers a day. Their most assiduous clients, sporting black hats and bushy beards,\u00a0are \u201creligious\u201d Orthodox Jews taking a sabbatical from their wives.<\/strong><\/h5>\n
Here is the kind of eye-popping revelation we come across in Hammerman\u2019s shocking book:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
I had a very famous rabbi who would come and order a girl to have sex with him in the doggie position, and would ask her to bark,\u201d a former brothel owner testified at a [Knesset] parliamentary committee. One of the working women, presented as a devout Christian, expresses an aversion to her religious clients: \u201cThey had a big black hat and under it [another] little black hat and they were real perverts.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n
According to a CNN report in 1998, Israel now has the highest per capita consumption of prostitute services in the world. One million visits are paid to prostitutes\u00a0each month, making brothel hopping one of the nation\u2019s most popular pastimes. Thousands of women are\u00a0abducted\u00a0annually\u2014mostly from Russia, Ukraine, Moldavia, Uzbekistan and China\u2014and sold into sex slavery in Israel. \u201cThe situation,\u201d Jewish author David Weinberg wrote in a 1998 article about prostitution in Israel, entitled\u00a0<\/strong>Not So Holy Land<\/strong><\/em>, \u201cis enough to make you cry in despair\u2014or\u00a0vomit from\u00a0shame.\u201d<\/strong><\/h5>\n
