Measuring over 57 km and costing over 11 billion Euros, the\u00a0Gotthard Base Tunnel is\u00a0world\u2019s longest and most expensive tunneling project in History.\u00a0Going through the Swiss Alps, the tunnel took 17 years to complete and is said to be a symbol of European unification in a context of rising nationalism and closing borders.<\/h5>\n
To celebrate the inauguration of this tunnel, an elaborate ceremony was presented in front of European dignitaries such as\u00a0Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, President Francois Hollande of France and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. While most would expect an up-beat, celebratory ceremony, guests were rather treated to a disturbing show\u00a0orchestrated by German director\u00a0Volker Hesse, where a man dressed as a goat\u00a0presided a strange ritual.<\/h5>\n
