Russian warships in the Caspian Sea launch cruise missiles on targets in Syria

Putin has positioned the mobile rocket launchers, which able to shoot a jet out of the sky 70.000 feet up, in the heart of president Bashar al-Assad’s territory, raising concerns for the safety of coalition planes in the war-torn region.

With Islamic State (ISIS) and Syrian rebels having no access to fighter jets, the SAMs could only be used against United States and its allies such as Turkey.

Former Navy chief Lord West said the presence of the weapons makes the situation in the area “highly risky”.

He said: “These are surface to air missiles of the later versions and are very highly capable missiles.

“ISIL doesn’t have any aircraft that it’s using and I’m sure Russia doesn’t intend to shoot down Syrian government aircraft so one must wonder why exactly are they there?

“Are they expecting to shoot down coalition aircraft? Are they expecting attacks from coalition aircraft?

“That does worry me.

“They would argue that it’s part of a deployment package but I think it’s an extremely dangerous strategy.

If you’ve got a capability then clearly there’s an occasion when you might be able to use it.”

News broke that Russia were bringing SAMs to Syria in September.

Earlier this week a clear sign they could be turned on the coalition came when Turkey said its fighter aircraft was locked onto by the sophisticated mobile defence units.

Lord West, who was also Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office under Gordon Brown, said the crowded air space in the skies above the war zone already makes it highly dangerous.

With the introduction of SAMs, he said passenger jets now need to completely avoid the area.

Risks have already been identified by the European Union’s aviation experts because of rockets being fired from the Caspian Sea by Russian warships and fears were mentioned for commercial aircraft yesterday in the report by Dutch investigators into the downing of the MH17 jet.

The Malaysia Airlines plane was shot with a Russian-made SAM.

Lord West said: “I hope there’s a sensible discussion. This was raised by the Dutch.

“These things are capable of flying 60-70,000 feet – higher than passenger jets can reach – so it’s clear to me aircraft has to go around the region.”

Lord West has called for an end to the aggression between Russia and the coalition and wants all nations involved in the conflict raging over Syria to throw their efforts into the battle against ISIS.

He said the terrorist group was the biggest threat at the moment and, despite continual global angst against Assad, Lord West said the Syrian leader must stay.

He said: “The sensible response of what to do is to all talk about how we can defeat the greatest treat to us which is ISIL. I always call them the wolf closest to the sledge.

“They say they want to kill us Brits, European, Americans and Russians. Assad hasn’t said these sorts of things so, to my mind, we should destroy them.

“I personally don’t think Assad is a very nice person. He’s done some dreadful things but it seems to me to maintain the most important aim which is killing ISIL we need to all talk – that’s the coalition of over 60 nations, also Russia, also Iran, also Assad.

“Talk and have something like a contact group possibly where we can all have a discussion and work together to do that destruction.

“Part of that I’m sure will see Assad stay in place.”
